"So this is where we eat. Try not to raid all the good stuff, share it around otherwise you wouldn't want to fall asleep. Also, stay away from things that say it's someone's, then you will definitely be killed. Every one has a day where they cook dinner, you'll probably start soon. Other than that, that's all you need to know" Zoe explained when they entered the 'dining house', as they apparently called it. "Help yourself."
Dan nodded, opening up the fridge (which he was surprised they had electricity to run it) and scoured the contents. He decided on just a ham and cheese sandwich, spotting the bread in the pantry.
He sat down to eat, hungry after that exercise. Zoe had already begun eating a fruit salad.
"So, you want to ask me questions? I would think you have a lot to ask, so I'll try to answer it if I can" Zoe spoke between mouthfuls.
Dan stayed quiet, thinking about what he wanted to know desperately. A lot of things came to mind, but they seemed slightly trivial. He decided to start at the basics.
"Why did you bring me here?"
"We needed you. A series of events happened many years ago and you were involved in it, so we have been keeping an eye on you. If Phil hadn't saved you, you would have been killed."
"What events? Why do you need me?"
"I don't know what happened. Only PJ and Phil would know, but I doubt they will tell you. It has scarred them. Left them having nightmares which they still have to this day. Why we need you? Because you have a power, one that only you can yield. Don't ask me what that is either, I don't know."
Zoe finished her fruit, pushing the bowl away. She leaned back in the chair, arms folded while watching Dan.
"What is this mission you mentioned last night?" Dan asked after a pause.
"Well, we have been planning it for a while. We intend to raid the darklings 'nest' and somehow banish them or at least stop them from taking people. You are somehow involved in it all." Zoe vaguely answered.
Dan stayed silent. He finished his sandwich off, and mirrored Zoe's position.
"How did all of you even meet?" Dan wondered aloud. It seemed strange that all of them were living and working together, even though they didn't appear to be related.
"Phil and PJ have been friends since childhood, always somehow near each other. Carrie and I are the same story. Chris became friends with PJ a few years ago. We were all brought together by similar circumstances and situations that happened to many, if not all, of us."
"What circumstances if I can ask?" Dan inquired further
"Well for one, we were all transported to this land. It's not a country on the map, so I'm unsure of what it is called. And second, we have these 'powers' you would say, but I call them extensive areas of the mind, that prevented us from being accepted members of society."
Dan's eyes were wide. There were a few key pieces of information there that were new. And how to process them he didn't know how.
They had powers? Like ones you would see in movies? He wondered what kind, and a list ran threw his head. Then, his thoughts turned. They hadn't mentioned them until now, what if they were dark and destructive? Ones that you would wish you hadn't heard?
He began to think more. What is his power? How has he not realised it before? All his life, he had never suspected it. Yet, here's some girl already knowing important details of his life that he had never discovered.
Zoe stood up and walked over to a small cabinet. Opening up the oak doors, she pulled onto a few papers stapled together and a pen.
"Alright, enough talking, let's start on the testing. It's not like a school test, so you won't be pulling out your hair. They're pretty simple." Zoe explained as she sat back down. She slid the paper and pen across the table.
