I’M DEAD ASLEEP, my body turned onto my good arm’s side, toward the door. Blake, Ethan, and Anna are all asleep around me. It takes a while before I really hear anything, before someone’s voice invades my thoughts.
“I’m sorry,” the voice says. It sounds too familiar, and I know exactly whose it is.
“I really am… I just… God, I don’t even know what to say right now.”
The voice goes away for a while, and I start to think that maybe it won’t come back.
“I guess words can’t really express what I’m feeling,” it says finally, “I don’t know if that’s all it takes to fix this… But I am going to try, so don’t think you’re not worth it.”
Then the voice really disappears, and after a while I open my eyes, see the same closed door, the same white wall. Ethan’s awake, tapping his phone several times. I glare at him.
“Was Aiden here?” I ask. He jumps, stares at me.
“Don’t know,” he says as he looks back at his phone, “I just woke up.”
I nod, exhale. It’s really a shame. I was hoping maybe Aiden turned around, decided it was time to actually come and see me for the first time in three days.
I guess I was wrong.
