Nicole decided to hit the snooze button on her alarm clock for the third time this morning before needing to get up and get around for school. She had some trouble sleeping the night before from worrying about how the next school day was going to play out. The thought of sitting down in Benedict's first period class and having to pretend like there was not a past connection between both of them sent excruciating pains to the center of her head.

*Beep*

*BEEP*

*BEEEEP*

Nicole, lying face down into her pillow, flung her arm on top of the alarm clock on her nightstand until the beeping came to a stop. She let out a long moan and slipped her legs off the bed into a nice pair of blue slippers her dad had once bought her as one of his many "I'm sorry for divorcing your mom" gifts. The divorce left a huge scar on Nicole's life, one her father's "thoughtful gifts" could not repair. She eventually forgave him for hurting her mother, but still wished he hadn't abandoned them. He must be happier now since he moved on to a new woman pretty quickly. They never met her in person, but they do know of her existence.

Nicole lurked down the stairs into the kitchen and plopped onto a chair at the dinner table.

"Is someone a little grumpy today?" Nicole's mother asked mimicking her pouty expression while closing the refrigerator door.

Nicole turned to face her mother and knitted her eyebrows. "Not funny mom," she said.

"Is something bothering you? Would you like to talk about it?" Her mom asked in the most polite way.

Yes, mom. I have feelings for my teacher-Nicole thought, but actually said,
"It's nothing really. Just some typical teenage girl stuff."

"Oh, okay. I understand." She said nodding her head up and down while buttering some toast.

Nicole didn't want to bring her father up into conversation, but she couldn't stop herself from asking a question that's been bothering her for awhile.

"Mom, do you think Dad and his new 'woman' are serious?" The words slipped her mouth.

Her mom nearly choked on her toast, and had to lightly pound on her chest with her fist while coughing. "Sweetie, I know this divorce thing has been pretty hard on you lately, but you shouldn't worry about how things are going between your father and his new girlfriend." Now she walked over to where Nicole was sitting and put her hand upon her shoulder. "He still loves you very much, and wants only the best for you."

Nicole smiled gently up at her mom and decided to keep her furthering questions to herself.

"Well, I think now would be a good time to go put some clothes on to wear to school today", she said but she was stopped by her mother's arms being wrapped tightly around her stomach.

Nicole was now oozing laughter. "Mom, let go, you're squishing me to death!", she used her last bit of air to breath out.

"Alright, but just know that I-love-YOU", her mom said while poking a finger against her nose.

"And I love you too", Nicole replied back in a loving tone.

------------------

Nicole showed up to school a little late today, probably because she continually hit snooze on her alarm clock.

"Shit", she mumbled under her breath as she stood in front of a closed door reading the name, Mr. Cumberbatch. The bell had already rung to begin first period, and she could hear the laughter of students inside. She stood there in hesitation on whether or not to enter until she heard a deep voice come up from behind her.

"Well, are you going to go in?", a voice chirped a few inches from the back of her head.

Nicole knew exactly who it was and spun around to meet eye to eye with Benedict. She realized how close they actually were because she could smell the scent of his cologne.

"Oh, I, um... I thought the door might've been locked" She said blushing, completely embarrassed that she had been caught standing outside his classroom.

"It's not locked. I believe the class must've closed it on their way in", he said reaching an arm behind me to open the door. Nicole felt his arm slightly touch her side and it sent shivers down her spine.

"After you", he said gesturing for her to enter the classroom.

Nicole tried to walk casually back to her seat, but her legs were trembling the entire time. She was still a bit flustered from short moment his arm bumped up against her. She shook her head, trying to remind herself that she is not allowed to have any of these feelings for him. He already explained to her how he felt about the situation, and that nothing could happen between them. Besides, it's not like anything ever happened anyway.

"Good morning students", Benedict said while setting his suitcase onto his desk and unhooking the latches. He flipped it open and pulled out a thick stack of papers. He held them out in front of him and looked up to scan all the student's faces. Nicole hoped he would lock eyes with her, even just for a second, just to let her know that he does in fact feel something towards her. But as he continued to scan, It seemed like she was the only person in the room he was actually trying to avoid making eye contact with. Hmm, maybe he did feel something and that's why he couldn't look at me, she thought. No. I'm just crazy.

"It's the beginning of the school year, and you know what that means", he said smiling while sighs and groans echoed in the room. "That's right! Pre-testing!" He continued speaking as he handed a packet to each student, "I know you all more than likely have a strong hatred for these things, but this is a way for me to see what you guys already know."

Nicole glanced down at her test and already knew the first couple questions. Hey, this is easy, she thought. She ended up finishing her test within 30 minutes and did not want to be the first one to turn it in. She started doodling on the front page. As she doodled some heart shapes, she began to think of him again.
It doesn't really hurt anyone to only have thoughts about Benedict and not act on them, right?- she thought. Cumberbatch, What a name. Benedict Cumberbatch. Nicole, Nicole Cumberbatch. Oh, that sounded amazing.
She wanted to see what it felt like to sign that as her name, so she wrote it at the top of the test. She looked down at the beautiful name in admiration.

The room was silent except for the sound of Benedict's charming hum of a song. Nicole couldn't make out what the song was exactly, but it sure sounded familiar. Her eyes shot upwards and she caught glimpse of Benedict at his desk. Lightly biting her pencils eraser, she imagined what it would be like to brush her fingers through his hair, and to kiss his perfectly shaped lips.

Her fantasy was soon cut short as a bell rang to end the class. Benedict stood up from his desk quickly went around to collect everyone's test. Everyone evacuated the classroom, and moved on to second period. Walking down the hall, Nicole froze in her tracks. Her head had been filled up with so many thoughts about Benedict that she forgot to change her last name back from Cumberbatch to Miller on the test.

Her heart sunk so far deep into her chest that it would never be able to return back to its normal placement again.

OMG. What have I done?!?- she screamed inside her entire body.
