There's a knock on the door and Nicole runs over to answer it. She knows that it's going to be Benedict considering he is the only guest her mom has invited over for dinner, and she wants to be the one to greet him first. He previously had said that he was going to use this time as the opportunity to tell her mom all about their relationship, and Nicole wants to make him aware of some minor details he needs to make sure to leave out.
As she opens the door, Benedict appears in front of her with a big smile. It makes her happy to see him, but also very anxious at the same time. She puts her hands up to his chest and pushes him backwards out on to the porch with her ending up right beside him.
"Look, there's a few things you must leave out of conversation tonight," she says trying to keep herself sounding composed and not as frightened as she really was. "You can't tell my mom we've been dating while you were still my teacher. She has to believe we realized we had a connection once you left."
He brushes down the crinkles on his ironed shirt with his hands where she had pushed him and chuckles under his breath. "I don't know, I mean I left like two days ago. She's more than likely not going to believe we just so happened to notice a spark between us now."
She sighs and takes his hands into hers. "Please? For me?" She pleads with her sincerest puppy dog eyes.
He shakes his head while trying not to look her. "Aw, come on, Nicole. You know I can't say no to you when you make that face."
A contented smirk flickers across her mouth for an instant and then transforms back into a frown. "You know she'd turn you into the police otherwise, right?"
"Yeah, I know." He puts his hands on top of her shoulders and bites his lip in hesitation. "...I guess you're right, I'll stretch the truth a little," he grins.
She throws herself on him and embraces him out of happiness. He wraps his arms around her and hugs her tightly but quickly pulls her away.
"Oh, right," she laughs. "I got carried away. Sort of forgot we are standing on my front porch." She pulls her hair out of her face and pushes it back behind her ear.
He glances at the window and grins. "I think we're good," he winks. "No mother in sight."
She smiles and opens the door for both of them to enter back into the house. She takes his coat and sets it on a bench alongside the corridor wall.
"Mother, Mr. Cumberbatch is here!" she yells up the stairs.
"I'll be right down!" her mom shouts back.
Nicole spins around and motions for Benedict to follow her into the dining room. As they walk down the hallway, he quickly sneaks a kiss on the back of her neck that makes her giggle and jump forward. She winces at him with a playful glare and he in response throws his head back and chuckles. He was quite pleased with himself, but she was not. She wasn't willing to risk anything tonight. She knew deep down her mom would not take any of this well.
Minutes after both of them settle down into their seats beside each other at the table, Mrs. Miller makes her grand entrance into the kitchen wearing an extremely short slim fitting black laced bodycon dress. Nicole instantly becomes shocked at seeing what her mom is wearing and covers her mouth with her hand to stop herself from gasping. She's never witnessed her wear anything this revealing.
