"Ugh! I look fat in this dress! Why did I ever buy it?" Amanda throws herself down onto Nicole's bed wearing a long pink strapless dress and whimpers out many long discontented cries.
"Stop worrying so much! You do not look even a tiny bit fat. You look gorgeous."
Nicole tries to make her feel better because she knows she's only stressing out about the dance. Every year, Amanda envisions in her mind a perfect idea of how homecoming night will go, and they never turn out to be the way she expects. Something bad or misfortunate always happens that completely ruins the rest of the night.
"You're right," she says sitting back up with an amazed expression on her face. "But, I'll never look as stunning as you do right now!"
Nicole tilts her head feeling embarrassed. "You really think so?" She looks at her reflection in her closet mirror and twirls the periwinkle dress she's wearing from side to side. It was tight around her figure; however, it flowed freely from her hips down. It had the appropriate amount of flattery for her slim yet well defined waist.
"Girls!" Nicole's mom shouts through the cracked open bedroom door. "Kevin should be here soon to pick you up. Make sure you'll be ready!"
The girls exchange agitated glances at each other. They both are very much aware that Kevin is not exactly well known for being punctual with his time management skills. His arrival time may vary from being five minutes to an hour late. This could very well be the downside of the night Amanda is so unwillingly expecting.
Nicole slides over to close her bedroom door. She turns to look at Amanda, who at this time is fully engaged at her mirrored image, and lets out a noticeable sigh.
"Nicky, what's wrong?" Amanda switches her attention over to her and sits down beside her on the bed.
Nicole fidgets with her silver chain bracelets and slumps into the comforter without saying anything.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" She leans in with friendly sympathetic eyes.
Nicole lies on her pillow motionless. There's a moment of silence between them before Amanda discovers what is really the source of her sudden unexplained change in behavior.
"...Are you still torn about your feelings for Benedict?"
Nicole nods her head up and down against her pillow. She sits up and lets out another desperate sigh. "He's chaperoning the dance tonight." Amanda gasps and she continues. "It's not that I don't want him there, because I do, it's just that I want him to be able to be with me while I'm there. Not watching me from a distance because our relationship is forbidden. You know?"
"Yeah, I know." She says in agreement. She pulls her in for a hug and lays her head against her shoulder. "Keep fighting, even when times like this in your relationship get tough. You two are meant for each other. It's only obvious."
Still hugging, Nicole glances down at her alarm clock on the night stand beside her bed and jumps back. "Oh no."
"What is it?" Amanda asks confused. She looks down at her phone in her lap and screams once she sees the time is 8:05. "Where the hell is Kevin?! He's already five minutes late!"
"Why don't you turn around and see for yourself, princess." Kevin's voice rings behind them at the door.
Both girls jump up immediately out of shock. "How long were you there..?" Amanda asks. She glances at Nicole hoping he hadn't just heard their little chat.
