The Presentation

I hear the automatic doors open and I knew exactly who it was and what it was about. "Scrub out. I'll finish. You can still make your presentation." Ben said. I thought I told that man to leave it the hell alone. " Luke, will you escort Warren out of my surgery, please." He started to protest but soon came to his senses. He walked over to Ben who was walking towards me. This man is gonna make a big scene and I know it. " Oh, don't even think about it. You do not know me." I heard him say. Dammit here it comes.

"Miranda, you are rolling over. You are quitting in the middle of the race, and that is not okay. Would you let me quit? Would you let Tuck quit? Would you?" I thought about his words but I didn't answer. "What did you tell Tuck when he wanted to quit the French horn? He was a terrible French-horn player, and still, - what did you tell him?" Dammit! He has a point.

"You made a commitment," I said.

"You made a commitment!" He repeats. "Now, who is first chair?"

"Tuck is." I said.

"Tuck is! You don't quit.

You don't roll over.

You don't let anybody take your chair! Miranda Bailey, what chair are you?" He asked.

"First chair." I say in a small voice.

"I can't hear you."

"First chair." I say a bit louder.

"First chair?" He asks. I know what this son of a bitch is doing! I'll thank him later.

"First chair!" I all but scream at the top of my lungs.

"That's right!" He says. I really do love this man. I lost my confidence and he was right there to cheer me on.

"Luke, tell the board to come in OR2 please." I said not taking my eyes off of Ben. He smiled at me and I smiled back. Wait, what if I mess up? I might have said that out loud because I hear Ben sigh.

"Miranda you won't mess up. You are going to be great. Where is the determined, fearless woman I married?" He said. I smiled and then I laughed.

"Ben, I was never fearless. I have fears and you know that. You know exactly what I'm scared of." I said.

"Well, you act like it. You carry yourself as a fearless person. I may know your fears but I also know that you don't let your fear and emotions take over. You can control them. So don't let them go now." He said. The doors opened and the board members all walked in putting on their masks. Even Dr. McConnell was there. "Go time," Ben said giving me a smile of encouragement. I smiled back and took a deep breathe.

"I'm sure Dr. McConnell gave you an excellent presentation. Scissors. Watch that tissue. She would be excellent for the job, but that's not the point. The point is McConnell and I offer different things. She is new and shiny and she likes a good challenge. I know. I spent the whole day with her. She jumps into new challenges all the time. That's what this place is to her, her newest challenge until she finds her next one and her next, but that's not me." I sigh. "See, I don't care if this place is the shiniest or the fanciest or if it's a beat-up hunk of junk. As far as I'm concerned, it'll always be the ship that made the Kessle run in less than 12 parsecs. This is not a steppingstone for me. I believe in this hospital and what it can do. I want to push this bucket of bolts to do the most impossible things you have ever seen. Then I'll do more because this is my challenge."

"There's a bleeder on the fossa," I hear someone say.

"Clamp. Use the argon beam. Avoid CBD. Slowly. Let me. Good. There." I instruct.

"This job was made for me. Staples. This job belongs to me. Suction. I've earned first chair. Suture. And every single one of you already knows it. Ready to close," I say. "Luke can you close please."

"That would be an honor. Thank you," he says as he takes over.

"Chief you have watched me grow from an intern to what I am now. You of all people know how much I have worked for this and how much I earned this," I looked at everyone and then looked at the patient. "Great job. We can take him off of bypass and get him to his room for recovery," I said to Luke. "I deserve this. I have been through hell and back with all of you and with this hospital. Why would you want someone who has no clue on what we have been through and possibly destroy what we built? I know what this hospital needs. You can't take one look at something and decide you know what needs to be fixed. You have to have some type of history with the staff and this hospital to know what it needs. What better person can you have than me? I'm not trying to sound conceited. I'm just trying to make my point. Thank you for your time and patience," I said and I walked out. I scrubbed out and watched everyone walk out if the OR. I continued scrubbing out until I felt a pair of arms wrap around my waist. I immediately knew who it was. Ben. He kissed the top of my head and I turned around.

"That was an amazing speech. If I wasn't already married to you, I would marry you again. My wife was fierce. I am proud of you baby," he said kissing me all over my face. I giggled and he kissed me some more. I heard a door open but I paid no mind to it and just focused on my husband's kisses. I kept giggling until I heard someone clear their throat. We looked over to see the whole board, Richard, and Catherine in front of us. "We just wanted to come in and tell you that you did a great job and will be making our decision before you clock out," Meredith said.

"Thank you and Chief can u stay behind I would like to talk to you and Catherine can you stay as well," I said to them. Everyone left and Ben started to leave as well. I grabbed his arm and pulled him back to me.

"I want to thank you all. Chief, thank you for your recommendation and for believing in me like you always do. Catherine, thank you for giving me that competition because it really pushed me to see why I really wanted this," I said to them. They both said it was no problem. Catherine said she was impressed and Richard said he was proud of me. That lifted my spirits and I almost wanted to hug them both but I let them leave. I stood on my tippy toes and kissed my husband long and hard. There was a passion in it that I never received from Tucker. "Thank you for being there for me when I lost my confidence. You really are the best husband any girl could ask for," I said after I caught my breath.

"That's what I'm here for," Ben said. We kissed once more before his pager went off. Once he left, I headed to the daycare to pick up my son so that he could go to his father's.

That's it for now my loves. I will update soon. Let me know how you liked it. Vote and comment. Luv ya.
