My whole backside ached with fierce pain and I had absolutely enough of the constant jolting up and down as Clop wandered along the countryside. My teeth were sore from clenching them, trying to stop myself from biting my tongue for the 32nd time. Yes, I was counting. I couldn't afford to speak and though Sebastian made an effort to make small talk it was unsuccessful when I refused to reply for fear of more injuries to my mouth.
"Eve are you alright? You've been quiet for a while now." Sebastian commented again, it was beginning to ....... actually, I'm not sure how I felt about it to be honest.
"I'm fin-" I was cut off as Clop stumbled, causing me to bolt upwards into the air slightly and slam back down, just as I landed my teeth clamped down again on my tongue and I tasted blood in my mouth, making me automatically cringe as tears pricked my eyes and face burnt red from embarrassment.
With a huff I asked Clop as politely as I could to halt and slipped off her back, wincing as my foot collided with a sharp rock, scraping away at some skin.
"Eve? What's wrong, why did we stop?" Sebastian clambered down clumsily after me, his brows creased as he held onto Clop's reins tightly. I wiped away tears quickly and turned back around, my stare hard as I gazed at both him and Clop. I felt my face burn as my hands curled into themselves, my nails biting into the skin of my palms as I trembled.
Nothing! Nothing is wrong at all! My backside is NOT sore! I haven't bitten my mouth thirty three times and I certainly DID NOT just step on a Mother forsaken rock!" I screamed, my chest heaving as I clamped a hand onto my mouth, shocked at my sudden outburst.
Sebastian too was shocked to say the least, his mouth wide open and Clop's reins had been long forgotten, laying on the ground as he stood there, staring at me.
"Mother's oceans! I am so, so sorry. I never meant to raise my voice..... I've never done that before....I was just so....." "Frustrated? Angry? Infuriated? Mad?" Sebastian finished for me, providing words of which I didn't know the meaning of, of course.
I nodded slightly, letting my hair fall over my face as I calmed down, the beat of my heart slowing and my breathing returning to a normal rate as I slumped down onto the ground, inhaling and exhaling slowly.
"Hey it's alright, you're only hum- ahem, it happens all the time to people." Sebastian tried to reassure me, but it wasn't working as I crossed my arms over my chest and concentrated on calming myself completely. Something thick entered my nose, a waft of, smokey, thickened air. It made my eyes water and sting as I coughed harshly, hacking away.
"Something's..... burning..." I managed to choke out as stood up again, following the trail of smoke with my eyes. It eventually led to large orange flames in the distance, buildings alight.
"Over there!" I pointed out, shaking Sebastian out from his trance and away from Clop's stationary body. He snatched up her reins, hauling himself back into the seat on Clop's back and hoisted me up in front of him, ordering Clop to race down the trail to the village below.
"Hold onto Clop's mane, you'll fall off otherwise." He instructed and I obeyed quickly, eyeing the ground as we rushed past, small animals scurrying away. My grip tightened as Clop's chest heaved, I could hear her heart pounding in her chest and she leaped over a fallen tree, a branch scraping my foot and slicing it open.
I cried out, leaning back into Sebastian as he huffed, tightening his arms around me a little as we neared the border of the burning village. Orange flames licked at the wooden hovels, consuming them like starving animals. I broke into another coughing fit as I saw a darkened figure sprint away from a freshly alight house. I slumped to the ground, trying to get Clop to pursue them.
"Clop.... please get them..... they're....suspicious." I choked out, hoping she still understood me. She reared, Sebastian still atop her back as she bolted after them, he almost fell off in surprise.
I heaved, still coughing as I heard the soft cries of a child from somewhere inside a building, their wails muffled and choked out almost completely by the roaring flames. I wandered over to the nearest building the fire licking at my freezing skin and warming it dangerously. I took a deep breath, holding it as I searched through the rubble and ash, blindly delving into the blackened building as my hands clamped lightly around something warm and squishy.
It wailed, wet, clean tears streaking the child's face as he bawled his eyes out, holding onto my skirts with ashen hands. I exhaled, the air around me weakening me as I breathed in smoke filled air. Coughing, I dragged the child outside with me, still clinging to my dress as I slumped onto the ground, hugging him to my chest as I breathed in the fresh air.
"My baby! Oh thank God this day that you saved him. Gold bless you child!" A woman cried from above and behind me. I looked up to meet dark brown eyes, the whites bloodshot from crying and her cheeks were streaked with dried tears. She took the child from my arms, his crying ceasing as he clung to his mother. A small smile crept onto my face as I felt relief sweep through me.
My eyes felt droopy and I became incredibly tired, exhaustion overwhelming me as I heard the stomping of feet followed by loud clopping of hooves. At least I know why Sebastian named her Clop.
"I JUST WANT TO GO HOME!" A voice screamed a few feet away from me, making me bolt upright and stare at the retreating figure.
She had red hair, dark blood red hair with a pair of vibrant green eyes that seem to stare into my soul as she noticed me. Her ears were elongated and pointed at the tip and her face was thin and angular. She was.....one of my kind.
She grinned visciously as she sauntered over to me, her laft hand glowing orange as she neared me, she held her boiling hand to my neck and I gulped, my hands getting clammy.
"Finally," she breathed, relief sweeping across her face as she stared into my eyes. "I can go home."
