I struggled against my bonds, the rope digging and biting into my skin harshly, drawing warm, black blood that oozed thickly onto the dirt beneath me. I gagged on the filthy cloth in my mouth, my saliva soaking into it and becoming cold, disgusting me and making me cringe. I could still hear Sebastian's protests coming from outside the small warehouse I'd been shoved into while the townspeople decided what to do with me, he had verbally fought for my freedom, though it went against his values and religion to do so physically. My cheeks had warmed when he debated my case, it's a wonder he continued to keep such a troublesome thing like myself around. After all I'd done, he still helped me.
"It wasn't her! There was a different woman who was the....witch, that burnt that village down! Why wont you just listen!" He tried to tell them over and over again but they only replied with grumbles of doubt and murmurs of skepticism. My chest felt warm and my heart swelled, a small smile crept onto my face as I shuffled forward on my knees, peeking through a crack in the door, I saw a glimpse of shining blue within Sebastian's sleeve and I grinned, at least Fauria was safe.
Eve! Thank Mother you're okay! Her bell-like voice chimed into my head as she zoomed past the angered villagers, confusing them as they glanced at the bright blue blur that flit past them. Fauria squeezed herself through the small crack in the door and landed a large hug around my neck, or half of it because of her tiny arms. I giggled and sighed with relief at the cool sensation on my wrists as Fauria healed them a little, closing the wounds but leaving the pain lingering.
"What th-" The door burst open, shocking me into falling backwards and snatching Fauria in my hands, holding her softly as to not hurt her, though the overly large and looming figure over me caused me to tremble in fear and choke back a whimper. The stocky man grinned viciously as he hauled me to my feet roughly, his grip cutting off the circulation in my upper arm and leaving nasty red finger marks behind.
Fauria shrieked as she was torn from my hands, being squeezed, poked and prodded. In defense her eyes glowed a bright, unnerving red as her wings turned crimson and she bit down on the skin surrounding her frail body. Her captor frowned, furrowing his brow as he gripped harder on her, causing her to claw at his hand before fainting.
"If she's not a witch then what is this.....thing?" The man glowered at myself before glaring at Sebastian, waving Fauria's unconscious body in his face. Sebastian's face darkened, his hands balled into fists as he shook, taking deep, ragged breaths.
Was he...angry? For our sake? I smiled a little, scolding myself silently for liking it considering the grim situation and bit my lip harshly.
"She's a witch, and witches here.....they burn." The man growled, his face adorning another grin as he threw Fauria into the air, her small body landing roughly into Sebastian's chest as he swiftly caught her, cradling her in his palms.
"BURN HER! BURN HER AT THE STAAAAKE!!" The villagers roared, their cries overwhelming me as I flinched, being dragged to a large pike surrounded large pieces of dry wood and twigs. Roughly I was pushed onto the almost unseen platform the pike had been placed on and bound to it wordlessly. The same man grabbed a nearby flaming torch, bringing his grimy face close to mine, so close that I could smell his horrendous breath brush against my skin as he proceeded to lick my ear and whisper into it.
"It's such a pity to kill you my dear, you are so, so beautiful. Witch." He spat with disdain, licking his lips before setting the wood around me aflame.
Screams pierced my ears and tears fell down my face silently as the living peaces of wood or leaves burnt horribly, begging, pleading for help. The fire licked at my skin, warming it above my original temperature and causing me to struggle violently. At this rate I'd die.
The water magic within me shrieked like a banshee as the fire snaked it's way to my legs, reaching ever higher. But the fire magic, the newly created pact made between us strengthened, multiplied and healed the burns on my skin that formed. A scream erupted from my lips, the process of the healing becoming beyond painful as my water magic warmed, melding completely into the fire, becoming.....hot and yet cold at the same time.
Tears streamed endlessly down my cheeks, evaporating and becoming steam as the fire fizzled them away, I blinked them away staring upward, to the sky. To home.
For hours the fire burnt, for hours they watched in awe. For hours the screaming and shrieking continued until finally all that was left was embers and scattered ashes. The pike and bonds had long disappeared, scorched to the point of ash, I would have moved long ago had the healing not taken such a large toll on my now exhausted and frail body.
I glanced around, black spots in my vision as I searched for a pair of mesmerising grey green eyes and relief flooded my system as I met his shocked gaze.
"Sebasti-" I was cut off as darkness overwhelmed me, my outstretched hand reaching for him as he trudged dazedly over, a sad, reassuring smile reaching his face as I collapsed into his warm arm. The other still holding Fauria.
***Sebastian POV*** (I know it's finally here!!! :D )
Eve's now naked and exhausted form fell into my arms and I removed my robes, cloaking her with them and carrying her over to the villagers, the night air slightly colder now but I was thankful for my thin shirt and cotton pants.
"She survived? How can this be!?" The townsfolk sounded outraged and I frowned, looking down and gazing at Eve's peaceful, slumbering face. Even I had no idea how she was alive, she was a miracle, an angel.
"The child is clearly blessed by God." The village priest spoke up, his voice scratchy as he stepped forward. The mob hushed as he said so, some looking skeptical whereas others began to agree, God damned sheep.
They all angered me to no end, just because of some rumors they immediately assumed she was evil! I tightened my grip and Eve stirred in my arms, groaning softly as she mumbled something before gripping my shirt with a delicate and pale hand. An unscathed hand, void of burns or evidence of her conviction.
"She's not human though! Look at those ears! And her skin was colder than ice beforehand, not to mention how she survived the burning or drowning!" A man argued, that same devil spawn that had lit the pyre alight.
I grit my teeth, clenching my jaw and stopping myself from saying a word, reminding myself of who was in my arms.
"Then she is under God's protection, she may even be an angel." The priest reasoned with them all and gasps erupted throughout the crowd, talks of apology to her already forming.
"T-Then explain her 'familiar' that little blue thing in his hand!" The man continued, enraged and scrambling for more excuses. The priest shook his head disapprovingly, smiling softly at me as he beckoned me closer.
"We shall take her to the church where she will be given safe haven and rest, as will you, Brother." I nodded, smiling back as we entered the building.
Dust and the smell of old books entered my nose and I began to relax, it felt like home to me. Every step I took echoed through the heightened roof and elongated halls, the stone floor radiating a familiar cold that reminded me of the woman still asleep in my arms.
I followed the priest to a guest chamber, placing Eve under the cover of the fur blankets and heading back out, smiling as I knelt down next to the altar. Clasping my hands together I began to pray, to thank God and to ask for his blessings.
"Brother." The priest spoke up, calling me to him. "Do you have any confessions?" He asked and after hesitating I reluctantly nodded.
"Speak, brother."
I gulped.
"I wish to forsake my vows...... I wish to love the woman within the next room."
