Tap. Tap.
I lightly stirred but I ignored the incessant sound on my bedroom window that had been repeating itself for five whole minutes. I tugged my covers up higher, then rolled onto my side, attempting to go back to the dream I was having.
Tap. Tap Tap.
The sound persisted for a few more minutes and I finally burst up out of bed, irritated. It was 1 AM and I needed my full hours of sleep so that I could get ready to go to school this week and not set it off to a horrible school year because I let my jet lag get a hold of me. What could possibly be disturbing me from this otherwise-needing-to-be-granted necessity?! I sighed and rubbed my eyes that were about to claw into my skull any minute.
It's probably just a tree branch swaying in the wind, I thought to myself. Then, I realized... There is no tree next to my window! Gasping, I scrambled off of my bed and tip toed closer to the window, where the mysterious tapping sound escalated faster and louder by the second.
I let out a scream, but only for a split second. I had a habit of repressing my screams in fight-or-flight situations.
Absolutely horrified, I fell backwards on my floor and clutched myself in fear. I didn't think that I had just mistaken that pair of eyes staring at me from outside of my window. I started to sweat and shake, with a million different ideas flowing inside of my mind. My mom, I gotta go call my mom. Or maybe I should call the police? But what if I was seeing things? I tried to close my eyes and inhaled, then exhaled, then opened my eyes again.
But, this time, I didn't see a pair of stranger's eyes staring at me. Instead, I was looking right into my best friend's widened, worried eyes, illuminated by the light of the moon.
I ran back to my window and frantically slid the glass up, opening it and letting a breeze in.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?"
Instead of answering my question, he pushed himself into my bedroom through the unbelievably small hole (oh, the miracles he creates) and tumbled across my floor.
"Seriously, what are you do-"
He covered my mouth with his hand and put the index finger of his other hand to his mouth.
"Whisper, your mom might hear us,"
As soon as I heard his voice, everything inside of me melted into a deep puddle and I couldn't stop breathing fast.
I silently sat there for god knows how long, but finally brought myself to face him.
"You... you're here!"
"You mean, YOU'RE here," he responded. "I'm the one who waited for you for a year."
Speechless, I just smiled and wrapped my arms around his waist. He hugged me back, squeezing me tight until I could barely breathe and started to smack his back playfully. We finally let go.
"I missed you so much," he whispered, holding my face in his hands. A single silver band, engraved with onyx colored patterns, sat on his right index finger.
"I missed you too... But that doesn't mean you're allowed to scare me like that!" I yelled. "I thought I had woken up to a horror movie.
He started to laugh until we heard my mom's voice echoing down my hallway.
"Sol? What are you doing up this late?!"
I looked at him, wide- eyed and panicked, just as he looked at me the same way.
"Hurry, leave the way you came," I said, nudging him in the back.
He nodded quickly, gave me a warm smile, and hoisted himself out of my window.
