Primary school!au. Jisoo and Jeonghan are 10 years old. You have been warned beforehand that this will contain unhealthy amounts of fluff.

Hong Jisoo and Yoon Jeonghan had been the best of friends for the longest time ever, at least since preschool. And for every single year on Jeonghan's birthday, Jisoo had never failed to surprise his best friend.

One time it was sneaking into Jeonghan's room before he got home from school to hide chocolate bars all over the room. Another time Jisoo got his entire class to throw a surprise party for him the second Jeonghan stepped into the classroom. Just last year he invited Jeonghan to his house after school for lunch, which was stew, knowing how much the angel loved stew, personally made by Jisoo himself with some help of his mom.

And that was also one of the reasons why Jisoo couldn't think of a surprise this year.

No matter how hard the 10-year-old racked his brains, he absolutely couldn't think of a present to give his older best friend. A halo, since he was an angel after all? No, Jeonghan had tons of that in his room already. A song for Jeonghan on his guitar? No, Jisoo played on his guitar for Jeonghan to hear on a daily basis, so it wasn't anything special. A soft toy? No, Jeonghan claimed that he was too old for those sort of fluffy non-living animals.

So all that Jisoo could do on his best friend's birthday was to avoid him, and pray that Jeonghan wouldn't corner him and ask for his present.

This didn't go unnoticed by the birthday boy, of course. Why would his best friend be avoiding him on his special day? Did he do something to make Jisoo mad at him? Throughout the day, Jeonghan received numerous gifts from all of the girls, and even one boy whom he recognised as Choi Seungcheol. That didn't make him feel better though. Jeonghan decided to question Jisoo when the day was over.

To Jeonghan's displeasure, the moment the bell rang, signalling dismissal, Jisoo was the first one out of the classroom, bolting away from the classroom as fast as he could. Halfway out of the campus, Jisoo realised he had left his pencil case on his desk as he was in a rush to pack his bag. But going back there meant a risk of bumping into Jeonghan! As he was contemplating if he should go back to the classroom or just leave it be, a familiar pencil case dangled in front of his face. Jisoo spun around.

"Silly boy. You left this behind," Jeonghan chuckled. Jisoo reached out to grab his pencil case from Jeonghan's grasp but the older yanked it away further from him. "Nope. Not until you tell me why you've been avoiding me today," Jeonghan dead-planned and Jisoo mentally slapped himself.

"You'll get angry with me once you know, I don't wanna tell you," Jisoo whined and pouted, turning away from Jeonghan. The birthday boy sighed and grabbed Jisoo's shoulders, forcing the younger to look at him. Jisoo continued staring at the floor like it was more interesting than Jeonghan's face.

"Listen. I won't get angry with you unless you set my room on fire or brutally killed my parents, and I know you aren't the type to do those sort of things, so I'm not angry with you. Tell me, Jisoo," Jeonghan bent down so that he could look into Jisoo's eyes, which were beginning to tear up already. Standing back up again, Jeonghan pulled Jisoo closer to him and wrapped his arms around his waist, bringing him into a small hug.

"I... I- don't h-have a g...gift for y-yo-you, I'm s...sorry..." Jisoo wiggled his way out of Jeonghan's grasp and walked in the other direction of where Jeonghan was standing. That's it, Jisoo thought as more tears dropped onto his shorts, Jeonghan's never going to be my friend anymore. He must hate me so much right now.

Jeonghan watched Jisoo walk away in awe. Instinctively, he ran over, grabbed his hand and pulled him back. "That's... it? Just because you didn't give me a present, you thought that I would get mad at you?" Jisoo nodded and Jeonghan couldn't help but let out a small chuckle. "What's so funny?"

"Don't cry anymore, you look so much better when you smile. Come on, smile for me," Jeonghan cupped his hands on Jisoo's face and used his thumbs to wipe away the tears, and then Jisoo smiled for him. "There you have it, you just gave me my birthday present," Jisoo was confused on what Jeonghan just said.

"Jisoo-yah, don't be upset if you don't give me anything for my birthday. Just being friends with you, you caring for me, spending time with me is already the biggest present I could ask for. And I asked for you to smile, and you smiled, so that counts as my present. Don't cry anymore okay, Jisoo? Especially not on an angel's birthday," Jeonghan laughed and Jisoo couldn't help but giggle too.

"Happy birthday, Jeonghan," Jisoo wrapped his arms around Jeonghan's neck and buried his face into his long and soft hair, inhaling the sweet scent of strawberries. Jeonghan returned the hug and smiled slightly at how cute Jisoo was. Suddenly, Jisoo turned his head to the side and pecked Jeonghan's cheek.

"My birthday present to you part two," he smiled so wide his eyes turned into crescents, something that Jeonghan was weak for. "My house today? I wanna blow the candles on my cake with you," Jeonghan suggested and Jisoo nodded eagerly.

As the two 10-year-olds walked to the birthday angel's house, Jisoo took Jeonghan's hand in his and held in his firm and tight grasp, and Jeonghan couldn't ask for a birthday present better than Jisoo.

-cries- what did i just write
