Chapter One

We arrived to school just minutes before the first bell rang. Breathing out a sigh of relief, we both walked through the main doors.

"See you after school!" My sister shouted as she raced off to class, leaving me to walk alone to my first class.

As I walked through the open door, the final bell rang. Made it just in time, I thought with a small smile on my face. I took my seat as my teacher was prepared to start class.

"Christian, did you finish the homework?" One of my best friends, Jeremy, asked.

"Yeah, but this is the last time you can copy it for the month. I don't want the teacher to fail us both," I replied, laughing, making Jeremy give me his famous bright grin. Usual Jeremy. He never seems to do his homework, but I've got his back and he knows it. We basically grew up together. Our fathers were best friends as well. We shared everything growing up. I'm not sure when it happened, but I found myself falling in love with him. He, unknowingly, made me question my sexuality. I believe it was two years ago that I figured out that I was gay. No one knows. I don't need to give anyone another excuse to come after me. That's how I see it.

I know it will never work between Jeremy and I. He is as straight as they come. Everyone knows he has a crush on my other best friend, Alyx. She is gorgeous. Her blonde hair perfectly frames her heart shaped face, and her green eyes are always sparkling. We met about four years ago, when she moved into town and joined my seventh grade class. We are currently in our junior year of high school.

"Thanks, man. You truly are a lifesaver," Jeremy sent me yet another giant smile.

Our teacher asked for our homework just as the bell rang signaling the end of class. I handed my paper to the teacher and waited for Jeremy to exit. We both have the same schedule. As we walked down the hallway, Alyx joined our group. This was the only class we all shared together. Jeremy was the first to notice her.

"Alyx! How was your weekend?" He asked excitedly.

"Alright, the usual. How was yours, Jere?" She countered. "Yours too, Christian?"

"Mine was great! My dad came home and we spent some quality time together. It was actually pretty awesome," Jeremy answered.

"Mine was fine," I waited for Jeremy to finish talking before I, too, replied. Alyx gave me a weird look.

"Just fine? You didn't do anything fun or anything?" She seemed generally surprised.

"Not really. Played some video games and did homework. That's about it," I shrugged. You would think they would be used to my answers by now. It was always the same, or we would have time to hang out together. Alyx went away to her grandparent's house this weekend, so Jere and I decided we would hang out whenever Alyx was available next. It's been a while since the three of us have hung out. Lately it has been just Jere and I.

"Wow, well you are boring," Alyx joked, causing Jeremy to laugh.

"You got that right! He never does anything fun if we aren't around," He stated. It was true. My mother refuses to leave the house much anymore, and she refuses to have anything to do with me unless she needs something. Jenna is usually at a friend's house on the weekends, which is probably for the best.

"Well, there is never anything to do by myself," I replied. What was I supposed to do? Leave the house and take a walk? There really isn't much you can do by yourself in this town. I don't work because my mom told me I had to come home and take care of her. Jeremy and Alyx just nodded in understanding, and we continued on in silence.

The rest of my classes flew by quickly and next thing I knew, it was time to head home. I said goodbye to Jere and Alyx, and went to walk to my car. Just then Jeremy asked if he could hang out today at my place. I didn't see the problem. Mom was at her meeting with the therapist (if you can't tell, the sessions are not helping). I nodded and we walked to the car. Jenna was waiting for me by the passenger door.

"How was class?" She asked.

"Not too bad. Yours?" This was our usual exchange. We both knew that the other didn't have much fun, but if we didn't ask about each other's day, no one would.

"Jere coming over today?" Jenna seemed worried. She knew Mom is an angry drunk.

"Yeah. Figured Mom isn't home to care anyway," I shrugged, explaining myself. She nodded in reply. We all piled into the car and in twenty minutes, we were pulling into the driveway. Jere and I headed straight for my room. "Want to play video games or something?"

"Sure, but I need the facilities first," Jere laughed. I nodded and waited for him to come back. It was a good ten minutes before he exited from the attached bathroom. "Why is there make-up in your bathroom? Is Jenna using your bathroom now?"

"What make-up?" I asked, knowing full well what he was talking about. I hoped he would forget about it. Leave it alone, Jere. Please, I thought.

"This," he said, lifting his arm up. In his hand was a thing of concealer. His face was confused. He walked closer to me. "It's not Jenna's, is it?"

Oh no! Don't let him figure out what's going on! Please!
