Chapter Six
Jeremy glanced at me, as if asking for permission. I nodded my head slowly. Just do it already, I thought. I was as prepared for them to know as I would ever be. Jeremy turned to his parent's once more. They were starting to look a bit curious.
Jeremy told them everything, start to finish. When he was done telling them what has been happening to me, I felt two pairs of eyes land on me. "Is it true? Why haven't you told us before now?" Then I felt warm arms wrap around me. A loving embrace.
"I... I didn't want to upset you. You have always been like another family to me. I thought, maybe if I didn't tell anyone, that maybe it wouldn't be true. Maybe my mom would come back and there was no need to upset anyone else. I'm really sorry," I blurted out. This time, I couldn't hold back the tears. They streamed down my face. "I just don't know what to do anymore. I mean, the fact that Jeremy even found out was by mistake. Now you both know and... I just don't know." I was getting really worked up.
"It's all going to be okay, Son. We will take care of things from now on, alright?" A warm hand rested onto my shoulder. The voice was rare to hear, but I knew that it was Daniel. Jeremy's dad gave me a reassuring squeeze, then pulled his wife gently away from me. "Why don't you call your sister and get her over here? You two will be staying here with us, unless determined otherwise alright? But neither of you will be returning to that house."
Jeremy's dad and mom left the kitchen and a few moments later, we heard clicks and a low voice talking in the other room. He must be on the phone. I glanced at Jeremy and he sent me a small smile and began walking to the living room. I followed behind him. I didn't feel like being alone.
Jeremy sat on the couch and looked at me and held his hand out to me. My heart skipped a few beats before I noticed he was holding out his cell phone. I took it and dialed Jenna's best friend. Erica's, number. I figured she probably went there on such short notice. A woman answered the phone on the second ring.
"Hello? Martha speaking," Martha was Erica's mom.
"Hi, Mrs. Jacques. It's Christian. Is Jenna there by chance?" I asked.
"Oh, Christian! It's nice to hear from you. Yes, Jenna is upstairs. Just hold on a moment. I'll get her right on the phone for you," I heard her set the phone down somewhere and heard her shout for Jenna to come get the phone. It wasn't long until another voice came on the line.
"Hey, Chris. What's up? Can I go home yet?" Her voice seemed agitated. She must be missing home.
"Um... Well... About that," I stuttered. Damn, why am I so nervous to tell her? Why does it feel so wrong? "You see..."
"Spit it out already! Can I or what?" Great, I just got her angry.
"We can't go home. Jenna, I need you to come to Jeremy's house. I'll explain everything when you get here okay?" I heard a muffled sigh.
"Fine. I guess I'll be there soon." Then the line went dead.
"Is she coming over?" Jeremy wondered. He glanced away from the show he had turned on while I was on the phone. "Dude, why are you so pale?"
"She's on her way," I whispered. My eyes searched for Jeremy's. When they found them, I knew he could see my fear. "What if she doesn't believe me? What if she thinks that I'm lying about all of this? I mean, why didn't I tell her before now? She'll probably wonder why it never happened around her. Or maybe because she never has seen it happen..." my voice drifted off. Words were flowing from my mouth without permission now. The only thing I wanted, that I have ever wanted since this whole thing started, is for my sister to be safe. What if she wants to go back because she thinks I'm lying?
