Chapter Three
Before either of us knew it, the front door was turning by itself. That could mean only one thing. We were too late. She was home, and we were in big trouble.
Jeremy glanced towards me, worry in his eyes. As if in slow motion, we watched as the door opened and a middle aged women walked into the room. She kept walking until she reached the couch, not even bothering to close the front door. One moment it seemed as if she wouldn't notice us, then she turned, facing us.
I remained where I stood, frozen in fear. Her gaze was burning a hole in my skin. I watched as her eyes shifted to the left. Her expression changed to one of anger, yet I could tell she was hiding it, as if she didn't want to show our "company" her dark side. I chanced a glance toward Jeremy. He didn't look like he believed her poker face.
"I didn't know we had a guest today," My mother said sweetly, a fake smile spreading across her face. I think this was the nicest I have heard her since my father passed away, and that has been about three years now. My mother used to be really kind. She cared for us and made sure we had everything that we needed. But after my father died in a car accident, I watched as she slowly deteriorated. She went from making dinner for us every night, to once every once in a while, then finally not at all. From there, the violence didn't take too long to start after that. It's been almost a full year hiding visible bruises.
"Um... We... We have a project... For history class... He was just leaving," I replied and gentle pushed Jeremy towards the door. Please, let us get out of this fine. Or at least let Jeremy leave without any harm.
"Oh well that's good. Then you can get dinner ready for us. Where's your sister?" Her voice sounded kind, but her eyes spoke differently. If Jeremy hadn't known that something has been going on, then he would have missed the difference in her.
"Actually, I was wondering if Christian could come to my place to finish the project tonight. I hate to procrastinate things. He could always spend the night so you wouldn't have to worry about him," Jeremy was quick to respond. His voice was determined. He wouldn't leave without me by his side. My mom went to say no, but Jeremy didn't give her the chance. "It's just for tonight. My mom already approved of it, and Jenna is gone to a friend's for the night as well. You could have a day to yourself."
This seemed to appeal to my mother's interest. She was about to agree, when I noticed her face suddenly changed. She was getting angry again. Her eyes caught mine, and her anger spiked. "No! He will not be going anywhere. He knows the rules. No exceptions. Now go start dinner and you get out of my house!"
Shock took over my body. She has never shown anyone other than myself her anger, even if it wasn't much of it. Jeremy took a step back, his original determination almost broken. I felt his eyes land on my face. I didn't dare to look at him. It would only upset her worse. I went to do as she had said, when I felt a hand land on my arm and pull me. I felt my back hit a hard back, and strong arms circle around me, pulling me backward. "He's coming with me. I refuse to leave him in this kind of environment. If you try to stop me, I will call the police."
For once, I was grateful that my mother left the door open. It helped us make a quick escape. Jeremy let go of me once we made it through the threshold, in turn grabbing the door knob and pulling it quickly closed. To my great surprise, my mother didn't follow after us. Jeremy remained by my side until he had me sitting in his passenger seat. He did it. He got me away from that hell. I felt my body start to shake, but for once it wasn't out of fear.
A smile spread across my face. I was free. Even if it was just for a night. The smile never left my face through the whole ride. We arrived at his house after just a few minutes. We enter his house, he dropped my prepacked bag by the door, and then proceeded to turn me into a tight hug. "I'm so glad I got you out of there okay! I thought for sure she was going to try and stop us."
I nodded to this. I thought she would at least step in our way, or grab my arm. I know whenever I go back, she's going to make me pay for leaving. If it were up to me, I would never go back. I knew it would only be a matter of time. I would go back, because that's where Jenna will be.
"Why don't we go eat something? It's getting pretty late. You must be getting pretty hungry," Jeremy said while walking toward the kitchen door. I followed behind him.
When we walked through the doorway, we were greeted by warm smiles. "I didn't know we were going to have company today. I would have made more for dinner. Hi there, Christian," Jeremy's mom, Martha, greeted. His dad, Daniel, stayed quiet but smiled all the same. He has never been really talkative. In all of the years I've known Jeremy, his father has barely said a full sentence to me.
"Would it be alright if Chris stayed for a bit?" I could tell Jeremy was being cautious. He was picking his words carefully so as to not bring questions to the surface, or at least not before talking to me about it first.
"Of course! You should know he is welcome here anytime. Christian, I hope you can think of this as your home away from home," Martha was quick to reply. I only nodded, a slight smile spreading across my face. We both sat down at the table and Martha passed us each a plate full of food.
A little while later, we all were done eating, and we each went our own way. I followed Jeremy to his room. It was the second door to the right after going up the stairs. His room was quite big, about twice the size of mine. There was a king size bed in the center and a huge flat screen TV hanging from the wall opposite the bed, with a couple of gaming chairs and gaming systems out front of it. Did I mention that his family is well off? I walked to his bed and sat on the edge. I gently laid myself backwards, breathing out a sigh of relief. I felt the bed dip down on my right.
"Are you ready to tell me now?" Was I ready? Could I finally tell someone about my troubles? Can I let my story be told?
