"So, what are you doing here anyway?"
The question had slipped from his mouth before it had registered in his brain. Silence quickly followed of course, Aleks' face heating up in embarrassment as James staring at him with a raised eyebrow. Tired eye's met through the early morning darkness and Aleks scowled.
A cough.
"What are you talking about?" James grunted tiredly, rolling his eyes and awkwardly grabbing a crate filled with goods, goods Aleks' uncle planned to sell at the market that was haphazardly set up every other Sunday. Of course, the brunette had no interests whatsoever towards it, but of course, he never really got much of a choice with that stuff.
After some petty argument his uncle hadn't even taken seriously (he had actually found it highly amusing, only aggravating the teen more), Petey shrugged and made a proud claim about being the oldest out of them, said that Aleks would be going whether he liked it or not, and then tried to send Aleks to his little shared room. Key word being tried.
That of course ended up with Aleks loading crates into the back of a small truck at 4:30 in the morning, readying it for the 40 minute long trip into town.
Aleks rubbed the back of his neck from where he stood, slumped against a wooden pole, eyeing the plastic crate of chicken eggs he held. "Hah, no, I just meant why do you come here every summer?" He mumbled pathetically.
"Oh... Just, think of it as a summer job I guess." James shrugged his shoulders. "There isn't a hell of a lot of places around here that'd hire a teen with no real work experience. And well, I can't get work experience if no one will hire me can I? Besides, your uncle is a really generous man."
"There're plenty of places to get hired where I live."
"Yeah, I bet." James muttered, shaking his head and loading more crates onto the truck.
"Don't be an asshole," Aleks muttered. "Why don't you just leave?"
"Working on it, I'm hoping to get to a city." James sniggered, shaking his head and plucking the crate from the teen's hands, walking back to the truck once again as Aleks scowled.
"Hey, you fucker!" Aleks snapped and rolled his eyes as he heard James' laughter. "Whatever, you wouldn't survive. Have you ever even left this area?" Aleks sneered. The taller seemed to stop, not moving for a little while before he turned to look at the teen with a dead serious look.
"No."
The conversation ended there, leaving Aleks feeling awkward and like a bit of a jerk, and James silently doing all of the work. A half an hour later Petey made his appearance, obviously having just woken up and thrown on whatever was lying around.
He fucking slept and let us do all the work...
"Ready boys?" Uncle Petey chimed with a wide grin on his face. Aleks grunted but James stood up straighter and sent him a half smile, his almost angry demeanour from just moments ago disappearing.
"Yep, we're ready."
"Goody two-shoes..." Aleks mumbled to James with a scowl. As Petey walked past them, he hummed quietly, sending Aleks a grin.
"You know, Aleksandr, you could learn a thing or two from James." Aleks glared, hearing a scoff next to him.
"Yeah, city boy."
"Shut up."
The truck started with a loud, almost wheezing, spluttering noise, making Aleks jump. "Come on, I know you can't seem to keep your eyes off each other but pay attention!" Cackled the elder, sticking a hand out the window and gesturing for them to get in the truck.
James sniggered and walked forward before Aleks had reacted, but he caught the slightest tint of red on the taller one's tan cheeks, opening the door and jumping in.
"Fucker..." Aleks grunted, his own face feeling a little hot as he followed close behind, jumping in just before Petey started driving.
