"Beau, I'm in the hospital. Just come when you can. Room 302."
I listened to Summers voice mail for the fourth time. She had tried to make her voice sound calm, but I could hear the fear laced through her words.
My car weaved through the traffic, trying to get to the hospital as fast as I could. People were honking at me, but I ignored them.
Summer had already used up two of her three months, and was basically a ticking time bomb now. We both had tried to ignore this fact as long as we could, but hearing her voice mail I knew we no longer could.
When I made it to the hospital I parked in the closest spot and rushed inside. The elevator couldn't move fast enough and when I finally got to her floor I was stopped by our doctor.
His face showed sympathy and pain, two things someone can only wish to never see on a doctors face.
"The cells are starting to take over her body, she doesn't have much time left. Right now it's about making her comfortable."
My chest clenched at his words and I couldn't look him in the eye, "Does she know?"
He nodded, "She doesn't want the details, but she knows it's almost time."
My jaw tightened, as I nodded sharply. We all knew this was the outcome eventually, but how can you prepare yourself?
"I'm sorry," Dr. Rousseau said before leaving to let me go inside Summer's room.
I walked in and Summer smiled up at me tiredly. She looked awful, her skin was paler than her usual white tint. It now had a greenish glow to it, and her hair stuck to her forehead with sweat.
She was about to speak, but was cut off when she leaned over and puked in a trashcan by the side of her bed. She gave me a weak smile before she hurled again.
"Looking good," I told her, as I sat down at the edge of her bed.
"I try."
Summer's parents were both sitting in the chairs in the room, and I handn't noticed them until now. I introduced myself and held my hand out to the both of them.
"Beau Tanner. It's nice to finally officially meet you."
They both shook my hand, and her father just grunted.
"Yes, I believe I've spotted you quite a few times."
I gave her a weak smile, "Yes ma'am."
"Unfortunate that we had to meet now," she whispered sadly.
I nodded, not quite sure what to respond.
"Beau, what do you have in your hand?" Summer asked me.
I looked down, completely forgetting that I had brought her movies and magazines. I held them out to her for her to take, and she took them. She smiled, looking at the names of each movie.
"Find Nemo. Monsters Inc. Dear John. Did you pick these movies?" she began laughing.
"I just picked what I thought you'd like," I held up my hands in surrender.
"Sure, Beau. I bet these are your favorites secretly."
"Caught me."
"Do you want to watch one?" she turned her big blue eyes up at me.
"Sure. Just any but Dear-"
"Dear John it is!" She declared.
I rolled my eyes and leaned back on the bed. Her dad placed the movie in the DVD player and started the movie.
