Marvel lifted me off the ground in a huge hug. He was so happy. At least I could make someone smile in the last moments of our life.
"I love you too," he said. He set me down, and I grabbed a green sleeping bag. The sky was pretty dark, so the anthem should start playing soon. I sat between Clove and Lavena.
"So, are you and Cato together yet?" I asked Clove. She just looked at me with a mad expression and looked away. "Don't tell me you're still mad about the kiss," I said. She still didn't reply. "Clove, it was nothing. You and Cato should be together. You guys are the perfect couple."
She now looked at me and smiled. "I know, aren't we!?" she said. I laughed and agreed before the anthem came on that was followed by the death recap. They showed all of the dead tributes so that we could have a good idea of who was left. The first one that popped up was the girl from District 3, since Marvel, Clove, Cato, and I all survived. Then she was followed by Blaine and the boy from District 5. Then both tributes from 6 and 7, the boy from 8, both from 9, and the girl from 10. Katniss did survive after all. I wasn't sure, but I thought I heard Peeta sigh in relief.
"Come on guys," said Cato.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
"I see some idiot starting a fire down there," he said. "Hey you, District 3 kid, stay here and keep guard."
"I have a name..." said Aaron.
"So do I!" said Cato in an annoying voice. "I don't care if you have a name or what it is! Just stay on guard!"
We all grabbed a weapon and hurried into the woods after Cato. I just picked my bow. I also had knives in my belt if I needed one. After we got decently close to the fire, we slowed down to a quiet jog. I could see that the girl was sleeping, but she started to wake up as we got closer. I was pretty sure she was from District 8, but I wasn't positive.
Her eyes grew wide as she recognized our faces. She started to get up, but Cato pinned her down before she took a step.
"Please! Please don't kill me!" she screamed. Everyone laughed, and I laughed with them even though I felt bad for the poor girl.
"Don't worry, we'll make it quick," said Clove as she grabbed a knife from her belt. The girl screamed and struggled in Cato's arms, but it was useless.
"I got this," said Cato. He grabbed his sword from Marvel and plunged it straight into her stomach. I was disgusted yet fascinated by how he could just kill someone without thinking twice about it. He dropped the girl on the ground and cleaned off his sword.
"Twelve down and eleven to go!" cheered Marvel.
"Whoo hoo!" shouted Clove.
"Yay," I said quietly.
Cato went around and gave everyone a high five and then ordered us to search for any supplies. I grabbed the pack sitting next to her, but the only thing that was in it was an empty medicine bottle. Nobody else found anything useful either.
"We better clear out, so they can get the body before it starts stinking," said Cato. We all nodded and started walking towards our camp. I flipped my flashlight on and walked for a while until I noticed that a cannon never went off for the girl.
"Shouldn't we have heard a cannon by now?" I asked.
"I'd say yes. Nothing to prevent them from going in immediately," said Clove.
"Unless she isn't dead," said Lavena.
"She's dead. I stuck her myself," said Cato.
"Then where's the cannon?" asked Marvel.
"Someone should go back. Make sure the job's done," I said.
"Yeah, we don't want to have to track her down twice," agreed Clove.
"I said she's dead!" yelled Cato.
"What if she isn't!? We don't want to risk her still being alive," said Marvel.
"But you saw what happened! My sword went straight through her stomach! She couldn't of survived that," argued Cato.
"Cato! It doesn't matter how you killed her! We just need to make sure she's dead," I said.
"But she IS dead!" said Cato.
"We're wasting time! I'll go finish her and let's move on!" shouted Peeta. We all stared at him, shocked. He never even talked before this, and now he had the nerve to stand up to Cato!? I've seen him practice fighting though. He's pretty good with using a knife, but not even close to being as good as Clove.
"Go on, then, Lover Boy," said Cato. "See for yourself." Peeta held his torch in front of him as he walked back to the girl. We were all silent as we watched him disappear into the woods.
"Why don't we just kill him now and get it over with?" asked Clove.
"Let him tag along. What's the harm? And he's handy with knife," I said.
"Besides, he's our best chance of finding her," agreed Marvel. I knew he meant Katniss when he said 'her'. She seemed to be our major target.
"Why? You think she bought into that sappy romance stuff?" asked Cato.
"She might have. Seemed pretty simpleminded to me. Every time I think about her spinning around in that dress, I want to puke," said Clove.
"Wish we knew how she got that eleven," said Lavena.
"Bet you Lover Boy knows," I said. We all got quiet as Peeta returned.
"Was she dead?" asked Cato.
"No. But she is now," said Peeta. Right then, the cannon fired, just as if to prove that he was right. "Ready to move on?" We all agreed and headed back to our camp. It probably would've been a good idea to go hunting then, but we were all exhausted.
When we got back, Aaron was already deep asleep. Ha, what a good look out person. Once I got back into my sleeping bag, I was about to fall asleep when I heard Lavena whisper my name.
"Glimmer?" she whispered.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"Thanks.... for everything. I would probably be dead now if it weren't for you," she said.
"Aw, it's fine," I said. I flipped around to talk to Clove, but she wasn't there. I saw her sitting next to Cato with his arm around her. How adorable. I jumped when I was hugged from behind.
"Hey beautiful," said Marvel as he slipped inside my sleeping bag.
"You scared me!" I laughed. He laughed too and laid back, so I set my head on his chest.
"You know, this moment would be perfect if this wasn't a competition where we had to kill one another," he said.
"I agree," I said. "We survived the first day!"
"Well actually, it still is the first day so we could still die-"
"Oh, shut up," I laughed. He smiled and kissed me. I really did love him, but I knew that I would have to lose him. I cried just thinking about life without him. He realized that a tear slipped down my cheek, and he stopped kissing me.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"I... I don't want to lose you," I said. He hugged me and told me it was alright. That one of us would win. But even if we did, one of would come home without the other, and there was nothing we could to do about it.
