Chapter 4: The Fallen City

After I got out of the cave, I put Jeffery's lead back on and we made our way towards the city. It almost looked just as I remembered it... My old home... Now lying to waste in the dust. Even though from what it used to be it was destroyed, but after being nuked I'm surprised it wasn't just rubble. Maybe, just maybe someone else was here, someone living. I led Jeffery through the city and towards a building that looked safe with actual doors, sword always at the ready. I opened the door and stepped inside. I let Jeffery follow in behind me before I shut the door. I looked around. "I haven't seen any of those things around here... Have you Jeffery?" I asked my lil companion. He gave a small snort in reply. "Here, let's get this thing off your neck." I said bending down by him. "Can I trust you?" Another snort emitted from him and he stood still, I gave a lil smile and with a few wiggles of the knot, the lead came loose and I took it off. Jeffery looked up at me and oinked. "I knew I could trust you."

Suddenly I heard a different noise from outside. I looked over and out the window door. I heard the sound of zombies. "Shhh... Jeffery, there's someone outside." I whispered. I took out my sword and cautiously opened the door. "Come on let's go check it out." I said and walked outside, Jeffery followed close behind. I looked around. "Look at this place, Jeffery, this is where I used to live. Now it's... Now it's nothing..." I walked down a street, the occasional oink coming from Jeffery letting me know he was still following me. I walked over to a one story building, I recognized it. "This used to be my local Walgreens, I would get a drink from here everyday." I said as I glanced at it and then continued walking past. "I can't believe there's no one left... Where is everybody?"

After walking a bit longer, a noise caught my attention. "Wait Jeffery, you hear that?" The noise was coming from my right, I turned that way to check it out. Was something really here in this old abandoned city? Was it someone? I turned a corner and the end of the street I saw a very old close to collapsing structure, zombies were chasing something under, a human? I had to know. I sprinted down the street to help, as whatever or whoever it was, was being overwhelmed. I slashed at the zombies until all of them were dead, I then looked to what I was saving, and it was a girl. A real live human girl. I wasn't alone. She had dark brown hair that draped over her shoulders and back, she wore all black, t-shirt, tank top, pants and shoes and she had light brown eyes.

"Hey, you ok?" I asked.

"I did not need your help." She replied, her voice had a thick accent, I wasn't sure what kind though.

"I-it looked like you had your hands full..."

"I had them right where I wanted them, until you came along."

"Hey, we should stick together or something." I said hopeful she would agree, Jeffery was nice but he wasn't the greatest conversationalist.

"You wish." She replied walking past me.

I had to think, I had to do something, she could very well be the last living person here. An idea popped in my head. "You look like you could use some water."

She stopped in her tracks and turned to look at me. I gave a little smile in triumph. Yes.

~~~
After awhile we made it back to my place, I had made some chairs and set them down so we could both sit and talk while she had some water.
"I was not trapped." She protested.
"You were, I saved you." I replied.
"I wasn't-"
"Were."
"I was not."
"Were!"
An oink came from Jeffery ending the squabble. He walked over to me and I fed him a carrot, I looked back at the girl. "So... Do you have a name?"
"... Tavia."
"TrueMU."
"Look! I don't need friends, I must get back to my camp."
"Your camp?!" There's more people. This is great! She stood up.
"I have said to much." She headed towards the door. "I need to go." She opened the door, closing it behind her and running out.
"Wait!" I called after her, but she was already gone. I sighed but then I thought. If she was really going to camp... I could follow her, figure out where it is and come back and get Jeffery. It was worth a shot, I stood up and followed after her quietly. I followed her down the hill and threw the waste land, I hid behind rocks to avoid being seen. I quickly moved behind a tree and watched to see where she would go next, but I heard footsteps behind me, and before I could turn around I felt a sharp pain course through my head, and everything went black.
