The next day came about and the company trudged on. Early frost coated the grasses around you. As you rose to roll up you pack and catch up with the already advanced speed of packing dwarves, you felt someone hover over you. You looked up. Thorin was their again, hands holding out his coat. It had begun as a reluctance sort of thing that Thorin gave you his coat. And the company- for those few days durning this odd little change- all gapped and gawked as the King practically forced you to wear the coat. You didn't want to all the time. Some days were nice and warm, a toasty sort of feel to the air. Other days were like ice, cold and shivering to the point of misery. When you tried to explain to Thorin why you did not need the coat he merely scowled at you."Thorin I really don't need it today- I'm not that soft. " you had said. "I only needed it that night - I am truly fine. And I appreciate the concern but I'm ok now. " Thorin was silent, staring at you. His eyes were like storm clouds - the electricity shot forth and swung down at you, trying to intimidate you back into your hole. But you wouldn't cower so easily. You stood up, dusting your pants off and smiling. "Well - best not keep the company waiting !" You had called merrily. You made to step off when Thorins next words slashed at you.
"... Dwalin- Gloin." At his call the two dwarves came forward. "Hold her still .."
"Wait - hey!" Dwalin caught you before you could flee. "Guys I really don't need any help! I'm fine I don't need to wear the blasted coat !"
"We can't take any risks lassie !" Gloin grumbled. "We can't have our pet getting sick now. "
"Aye he's right - whatever place you hail from has poor sense in cold weather wear." Dwalin remarked. You could almost hear the dwarf turn his nose up at your clothes. "Poor choice indeed. This will be good for you lassie !"
You had fought. Yes you had. You had struggled and thrashed and tried to break free of your captors who didn't understand that you were a normal human.that you were no mere glass sculpture to the elements. You had done this every day for possibly three days. You had said you did not need the coat when Thorin presented it to you. You would refuse to put it on. Then Thorins goons would come, hold you down, and force you into the coat. You would then have to walk either by Thorin, Dwalin or Balin. The rest of the company had been told not to interfere and Gandalf just watched from afar in an amused cloud of smoke from his pipe. Throin had won though. Placing the coat on you and then securing it with those intricate dwarvish knots made it impossible to escape it on your own. The other dwarves seemed to like the look on your frame though. They commented and smiled to you, humming the praises to this torturous event. Kili and Fili would both tug at your sleeves, and you would fume at their adorable smirking faces. Dori, always so polite, would comment the most about your attire. "It does suit you Miss Y/N it really does indeed." And your change in attire seemed to warm all the companions to you in ways that your normal "unearthly" clothes had kept them at bay. Gandalf chuckled on one such occasion when the dwarves thought your shoes were not adequate and you had just barely won that argument about needing a new pair of boots - especially when the offered boots were those of Dwarvish size and build. The boots would have completely thrown off your balance as they were heavy and clunky at best. And they stank. "Be careful, y/n - " Gandalf warned merrily from afar. "- or they may very well turn you into a dwarf !"
But you were not the only one to be covered in something. Bilbo was subjected to the same torment - his clothes having gone so thin that you could see beneath in some places. You were not alone in the mothering of the dwarves. So they too turned to the poor little hobbit who would mutter "excuse me!" And "What now ?!" To no avail. They had found him a spare coat and cloak from Balin who was eager to help and keep the lesser companions warm.
So you and the hobbit were forced to be riddled in warm clothes like furry animals, grumbling all the while.
