Jay POV

They could come any minute. That’s what Jay kept telling himself while he cleaned. He checked for the millionth time on his parents, and this is why. Jay snatched the cigarette from his mother’s hand.

“You know you can’t smoke or drink today! Do you want to get taken away?”

She rolled her eyes, “lots of parents smoke.”

“Well today you don’t,” he was going to be stubborn until the C.A.P.P. was of their case. He’d skipped school to clean, which he’d done, all day. Jay grabbed the broom and went back into the kitchen. The house was VERY messy. It had taken him all day and last night with no breaks and all he got done was the kitchen and his bedroom. What if the C.A.P.P. came right now, with the living room looking like it did?

He sighed. This would be a long day.

Sadie POV

Jay wasn’t at school... again. Kyle hung around with me all day, obviously trying hard to cheer me up. Half the time he was doing little things to make me laugh but every time I laughed I remembered Jay and was sad again.

The other half of the time he wasn’t there. Well he was but he wasn’t paying attention to anything. Strange that he always seemed out of it whenever my friends... excuse me, ex-friends... were around.

The same thing happened the next day... and the next day. Where was Jay?

Drake POV

Drake knocked on Jay’s door. The noise coming from the house abruptly stopped. He listened to the huge hesitation then finally Jay opened the door with a smile on his face.

Drake knew that smile it was Jay’s fake smile. His suspicions were confirmed when Jay saw him and his smile dropped.

“Oh, hey man, you scared me I thought you were...” Jay trailed off staring into space and then gave Drake a hesitant smile.

“I scared you?” Drake asked, “Where have you been? You scared the crap out of me I thought the police took you or something!”

        “Close, here, come in.”

Drake followed Jay passed the spotless kitchen and living room staring in shock. Jay led him up to his parent’s room and picked up the duster.

Drake sat on the bed, “what happened in here?”

“Cleaning, three days of cleaning actually,” Jay answered without looking at him.

        “That’s what you’ve been doing?”

        Jay nodded.

        “But...why?”

Jay turned around, “four days ago we got a call from the C.A.P.P.”

        Drake raised his eyebrows.

        “The child abuse prevention program.”

All the heat left Drake’s body, Jay couldn’t be put in a foster home, he was his best friend!

        “B-but,”

Jay sat down beside him, “its okay, for now,” Jay told him the whole story.

“What about your parents?” He asked.

“Their in my room, the only place in the house I can be sure is beer free.”

“So you’re just going to pretend to be a normal family until the C.A.P.P. guy comes?”

Jay nodded, looking uncertain, “it’s not much of a plan but,”

Drake grabbed the broom, “but it is if I help.”

        They got to work.

Sadie POV

I felt like crying. Not only was Jay not here again, but neither was Kyle. I sat alone.

A group of older guys walked by me, “Hey check out the loser sitting by herself!” One of them yelled.

That's it, I went looking for Kyle.

        OH MY GOD.

I found Kyle. I’d looked everywhere I could think of and when I couldn’t find him I decided to just eat somewhere private where no one could make fun of me. That’s where I found him under the staircase...
