Bast sprinted into the building, waves of people melting out of her way, startled by her beastly appearance. She felt a familiar woosh of air as the Flash and Nova raced past her on either side. Behind her, security was scrambling as Cold appeared, guests screaming and flooding towards the exits.
She could hear Oliver arguing with them, and almost pitied the poor, stupid men who dared to get in his way. That, however, wasn't her main concern. Her senses on hyper-drive, she strained her ears for signs of the bomb. Closing her eyes, Bast breathed in deeply and exhaled slowly. The surrounding din of panic and fear drifted away, and she closed in on a single, dominating trill. Her eyes flew open.
"Flash!" she screamed. Barry was at her side in minutes. "Basement, first storage room on the left. GO!" Her tone left no room for discussion, and the speedster nodded, rushing away. Soon, another bright blur met up with him and the pair was gone in an instant.
Bast was hot on their heels, stopping only to yank Cold along with her, dragging him by the back of his parka. "Let's move, hotshot."
Cold made a noise of protest at the term 'hot'shot, but seemed to decide it wasn't worth it. Bast nodded at him, her hand going to her ear as she clicked on her comm. "Oliver, is everyone out?" She took the responding grunt as conformation. "Great, I'll meet you at the extraction point. Barry, Nova, are the charges in place?"
"Yep," they chorused. "Good. Cold, you ready?" Bast turned to the villain, and he gave her a weak grin. "Eh, good enough. Oliver, wait for us at the extraction point." Oliver made a sound of protest on the other end of the comm., though Bast payed him no mind. It was now or never.
...
When Bast and Cold reached the bomb, it was all they could do not to stare open-mouthed at the monstrosity. The bomb was a masterpiece, the mother of all explosives. Wires ran in intricate patterns around and across its surface, connecting dozens of switches and buttons. It seemed as if Mindbender had made it for the sole purpose of taunting them. And if they didn't hurry, it would be the last thing they ever saw.
"Well, that's just depressing," commented Cold, leveling his gun with the machine. "Whoa, hold it!" Bast snarled, her claws scrabbling against the gun's metallic surface as she aimed the barrel at the ground. It went off with a flash of light, frost glistening on the carpeted floor. "We can't just go shooting willy-nilly. We have to coat the charges, remember?"
Before they'd left for the charity gala, Cisco had tweaked the designs on the charges Bast's old team had made when they'd faced Mindbender the first time. With Caitlin's help, he coupled the DNA of Hannibal Bates with the explosive power of the charges. Using the shapeshifter's DNA code, they had programmed the charges to adapt to whatever other substance they were combined with. In this case, Cold's freeze gun.
"The charges are temperamental, we have to do this carefully. One-by-one." That having been said, Bast leveled the barrel of the gun with the charge, talking him through each step as they moved from one charge to another. As they finished off the last charge, the beeping sound issuing from the bomb seemed to grow more urgent. Bast, giving it a quick glance, realized they had about five minutes to meet Nova, Barry, and Oliver at the extraction point. So, being sensible people, they did the smart thing. They ran like the dickens.
...
When Bast and Captain Cold reached the roof, they found that Oliver had already gotten Barry and Nova to safety along with everyone else. Seeing that her little sister was alright, Bast released a relieved sigh.
Shooting a line over their heads, Oliver gestured for them to cross it. Bast cursed loudly and made a rude gesture before shoving Cold ahead of her, the beeping sound growing steadily in her ears. Without a moment's hesitation, the pair jumped off the roof, grabbing the zip-line's handle trolley.
Seconds before they had reached the other side, the roof was rocked by a huge explosion behind them. Ice peeked out of the windows, jutting out in large, cold spikes. Their plan had worked, the bomb had been contained. Bast gasped, the explosion rocking line. She then realized two things. The good news: Cold had reached the other end safely. The bad news: Bast hadn't.
She was a mere yard away from the safe zone before the line gave way behind her. Her clawed hands flailed in the air, Oliver reaching for her desperately. His fingers brushed hers, their hands slipping. The ground seemed to be rushing at her, her thoughts racing. 'I, Bast, former superhero of Sky Haven, died in an explosion because the oh-so-special Arrow couldn't catch a person three feet away from him! As I fall to my doom, I swear that my spirit will return to haunt-' Bast's train of thought stopped suddenly as she hit the ground and felt...snow?
Cold, in a rare moment of heroism, had saved her life, creating a huge mound of that blessed, powdery whiteness. Shaking out her fur, Bast grinned at him, walking to join the crowd on onlookers that were currently gazing at the building that had previously been the Town Hall. With the stupid expressions on all of their faces, Bast couldn't help but do something she hadn't done in years. She laughed a genuine, truly happy laugh.
...
"Are you sure you have to leave so soon?" asked Iris, a bit tearfully. Bast and Nova grinned at her, a tad regretfully albeit.
"Yeah, I think it's time Nova and I headed home," Bast said, grinning. They were standing outside of S.T.A.R. Labs-all dressed in civilian clothes- as they wished the young heroes farewell. Mindbender had been shipped off to ARGUS a few days previous, and they had all relished every moment of it.
"I'll be sorry to see you go, you kept it interesting at least," Cold admitted, bringing a smile to Bast's face. She looked almost like a regular young woman now, dressed in a simple t-shirt and jeans. With the way she was blushing, she looked rather striking as well. Nova laughed at her, jabbing her with an elbow. Bast shot her a look, giving the group a mock salute as she steered Nova away and towards the car. "Bye guys, I'll be sure to visit soon."
As they went to get into the car though, Bast suddenly turned around. She sprinted up to Cold, grabbed him by the front of his shirt, and kissed him square on the lips. After a few seconds, she pulled away, saying: "Someone had to do it."
With that she ran off to join Nova again, jumping into the car. Cold just stood there like a dumbfounded idiot. From the car, Nova could be heard singing, "Someone's got a boyfriend!"
Barry laughed. "That was...unexpected," he joked to Iris. The brunette looked at him slyly. "I don't know Barry, I think she had the right idea," she told him, seconds before yanking him into a kiss of their own.
