Gilbert was raised by his single mother, and life was good for the most part. Except he didn't have a clue who his father was, or what he even looked like. All he knew was that he looked nothing like him, because he was albino, and had silvery white hair, and piercing red eyes. He didn't look anything like his mother either. She had long brown hair and bright blue eyes, and the only thing Gilbert has in common with her is his personality. Gilbert loved his mother, she was all he knew, so one would understand that he was devastated the day she didn't come home from work. Gilbert was only sixteen when he got the news that his mother had been in a car accident and he had to get to the hospital right away.

Since Gilbert's mother had their only car, he had to take the bus. He was a nervous wreck the whole ride because the hospital didn't tell him any details. It took him just under an hour to get their, and he ran in the front door going to the secretary desk. He gave them his mother's name, and the secretary gave him the room number. Gilbert ran to her room and paused in the door way, making sure it was his mother. The only thing he could see that told him it was her was her chestnut brown hair and her bloodshot blue eyes.

He slowly walked in, looking at all the machines hooked up to her, knowing it wasn't good. His mother stirred, looking up at him, a small smile forming on her swollen lips. "Hey Gil." Her voice just above a whisper. Gilbert bites his lip holding back tears, sitting down in the chair next to her bed. "Hey mom, sorry I took so long." He is looking over her injuries when the doctor walks in looking at Gilbert with a sympathetic glance, then walking to the opposite side of the bed, looking at some of the numbers on the screen. He then turns to Gilbert and explains, "I'm sorry, but your mother won't make it much longer. She has a tear in the upper section of her lung and in it filling with fluid fast. Her condition isn't stable enough for us to operate, and she wont stabilize in time for us to save her."

Gilbert's heart stops, he looks from the doctor back to his mother. The tears he was holding back start spilling over his cheeks, hitting the blanket of the bed as he rests his head against the bed. He holds his mother's hand, careful of the IV needle and tube, trying to comprehend what the doctor has just told him. His mother is all he has, he doesn't know any of his other family, he will be completely on his own now. Gilbert lifts his head and looks at his mother when he hears  her voice, "Gil, I love kou, and i'm sorry that I have to go. But your va-" Her voice is cut off by a fit of coughing, she brings her hand to her mouth, and Gilbert sees the blood splatter off her hand to her face. More tears fall as he realizes his mother is suffering, he looks back at the doctor and asks, "How long? How long does she have?"

The doctor hands Gilbert's mother a tissue, then turns to him and tells him, "An hour, maybe two, her lung is already more than half full if she is coughing like this." Gilbert squeezes the blanket on the bed, trying to keep himself grounded. He looks up as his mother again, the blood wiped away from her face now. "If it doesn't hurt to talk mom, please tell me what you were going to say." Gilbert is looking for any kind of hope, and he is sure his mom was about to give it to him. He looks at her, holding the small hand of his dying mother. She gives him a small smile, trying to make him feel better, then continues talking. "Your vater is going to take care of jou now... I know jou have never met him, but he has a family of his own... and zhat is were jou are going to live." She has to pause occasionally to take a breath, but finally gets out what she wants to say.

Gilbert looks at her in shock, not sure that he heard her right. He has to repeat it to her to make sure that he has comprehended the words she spoke. "M-My vater... I am going to meet my vater?" Gilbert blinks a few times looking at his mom, waiting for her reply. She brings her hand up again as she goes into another coughing fit, this time not stopping. The doctor calls in some nurses, one of the nurses grabs Gilbert by the arm pulling him to his feet. "Jou have to go now." She looks at him with a sad face trying to pull him toward the door. Gilbert fights against it, pushing her hands away, going to his mothers side, tears streaming down his face. He reaches for her, kissing the top of her head, leaning close to her ear, "Ich liebe dich." Then he lets the nurse drag him out of the room, the last thing he sees is the doctor holding her shoulders down as she convulses forward in fits of pain.
