Chapter 3
---
“Don’t touch me.”
“Excuse me but this is my couch too.”
“Yeah well I was here first. So move.” Ginger shoved Colton off the couch with a forceful push. His eyebrows shot up in surprise, not realizing how strong she actually was.
“Damn girl. You’re pretty strong for a girl.” Now it was Ginger’s turn to raise her eyebrows.
“For a girl? Boy I’m pretty strong in general.” Colton rolled his eyes and stood up, walking towards the fridge where Parker was putting the food they had bought.
“So,” he said reaching for a bottle of Coca-Cola, showing the small of his back. “what are we doing today?” He unscrewed the cap and took a swig. Ginger looked at him incredulously; looking surprised those words came out of his mouth. He just shrugged and took another sip.
“Well, we are going to the beach in about,” I took a look at my arm, pretending there was a watch on my wrist, “37 seconds. So have fun doing whatever.” I grabbed two towels along with everything I had brought downstairs. Ginger did the same, but also grabbed two bottles of water out of the fridge, knocking Colton and Parker out of the way. I grabbed a key off the hook next to the door, slipping on my flip-flops and swinging the door open. Ginger followed me out, but not before throwing a ‘adios’ over her shoulder. She turned to me with a look of shock on her face.
“Reese…” She started. “I didn’t even realize Aunt Jill was married, let alone had a son. How the hell are we going to put up with them for the whole summer.”
“Hey, G, it’s going to be just fine. We don’t even have to talk to them. I mean, he can’t even be that horrible if he’s related to you.” I tried to console her, while also trying to start the golf cart. I turned around and backed out of the garage that was underneath the house, pulling out onto the main road. Before the cart left the driveway I turned to Ginger.
“Ginger. It’s fine. Seriously. Don’t let them ruin the best summer of our lives.” We both smiled at each other and pulled our sunglasses off the top of our heads and placed them on our face.
We reached the beach in less than a minute. As soon as we pulled up, we could tell that the beach was crowded. Luckily, it seemed like it was mostly college kids, or at least around our age. We grabbed all of our things and rushed onto the beach. Ginger checked out two chairs, while I grabbed the umbrella.
“Hi!” There was a girl standing in front of me, checking out the umbrellas. She was tall, about 5’9. She was a good bit taller, considering I was 5’6. She had black hair that was straight and was pulled into a high ponytail. She was wearing the uniform that whoever worked at the beach club wears. I looked at her nametag, reading her name, ‘Cindy’.
“Oh, hi, uh, Cindy!” I smiled back at her.
“Oh, no my name isn’t Cindy. I’m filling in for my friend. She’s at home sick with the flu. Bummer way to start off summer vacation, huh? My name is Brianna. I live here. Are you staying here for the summer? I’ve never seen you before.” She startled me with how much she talked, but she was really nice. I could tell she was a really peppy person.
“Yeah. My name is Reese. My best friends Ginger and I are staying at her parents place for the summer. We’re from Greensville, North Carolina.”
“Oh that’s so fun! Well, I should probably get back to my job, but wait.” She pulled her phone out of her pocket and handed it to me. “Can you put your number in? You seem really nice and I want to get together, you know, since you don’t really know anyone. I mean, you don’t have to.” She quickly added.
“No, yeah. That’d be fun!” I punched my number in and put my name in as ‘Reese from the Beach’.
“I’ll see you around Brianna!” I grabbed an umbrella and walked over to the chairs, grabbing Ginger’s arm. She was talking to a cute boy at the chair stand and obviously flirting.
“Oh, well, by Kale! It was nice meeting you! Text me later.” She yelled. I snapped my neck towards her when I heard the last bit.
“Damn, girl. You work fast. He already has your number?” I threw her a wink and slapped her butt. She giggled and blushed even more than she already was.
“Yeah, his name is Kale. He lives here and is really sweet.” She looked ahead and saw how crowded the beach was.
“Oh jeez! They’re so many people! I’m so excited!” She plopped our chairs down while I set up the umbrella. I grabbed the sun tan lotion out of her bag and started applying it. We sat in the sun and basked in what this summer had to come.
As I sat in my chair with my glasses over my eyes, listening to the beat of Fall Down by Miley Cyrus and will.i.am, suddenly the sun was blocked from my eyes. It took me a minute to figure out what was going on, and then I slowly took off my sunglasses. In front of me stood Parker and Colton smirking at us.
“Care to get out of my sun, cuz?” Ginger snarled at Colton while he kept smirking.
“As you wish, m’lady. The queen gets what the queen wants.” He bowed to her and stepped out of the way, setting his chair up right next to mine and Parker’s on the other side of Ginger.
“Obviously the queen does not get everything she wants or else neither of you assholes would be here right now.” She followed my lead and took out both of her earphones, grabbing a water bottle and taking a swig.
“Oh, Gingy, I just wanted to hang out with my most favorite cousin in this world. I mean, it doesn’t mean anything that we just met, like, an hour ago.” Colton said slipping on his glasses.
“I didn’t forget you, Reese. I think that we’re going to be the best of friends.” Colton said winking at me. I rolled my eyes and put my sunglasses back on.
“Oh c’mon ReeRee, don’t ignore me like that. I know that you secretly are in love with me.” He exclaimed, batting his eyelashes and making a heart with his hands. I snorted and let out a light laugh.
“Oh puh-lease. I wouldn’t be in love with you if you were the last human being on this earthly planet.
“Is that a challenge I hear, Ms. Reese?” Colton cocked up an eyebrow and smiled his snarky little smile.
“What are you at, Colton.” I rolled my eyes, not even preparing myself for what he would say next.
“I bet, Reese, that by the end of this summer, I can make you fall in love with me. I win, you buy me an ice cream cone, and if you win, which you won’t, I will treat you to a dinner at whatever restaurant you choose.” He put his hand out, waiting for me to shake it. I took a minute to eye his hand, thinking about whether it was worth it or not. There was no way I could fall in love with a cocky prick like him, I had nothing to worry about.
“You’re on, Grey.”
