Riley POV

I took out my key to the apartment from my backpack - third pocket, in the small zipper - and unlocked the door.

"Rileyyyyy!" I was greeted with my little brother, Auggie, attacking me with a hug.

"Hey buddy!" I ruffled his hair, then walked over to the pantry to grab a granola bar. I walked through the hallway to my room, saying a quick hello to my parents then throwing my bag across the room and plopping down on my bed. I munched on my granola bar as I opened my laptop up and started on some of my English essay.

When I had finished all my homework, I went over to my bay window to sit and read for a while. I reached over and grabbed my current book, Specials by Scott Westerfield. As I was intensly reading through a chapter, I saw a girl outside, sitting down and drawing in her sketchbook. I could recognize that blonde hair anywhere. (omg that rhymed)

I stuck my (super cute) lace bookmark between the book and placed it down. I grabbed my boots and walked to the door.

"Mom! Dad! Going out for just a bit!" I yelled as I shoved my feet into my boots.

"Alright honey! Don't go too far!" my mother shouted back.

I opened the door and scurried down the stairs to try to find her. (honestly i'm making this sound like a rilaya fanfic, i swear it's not)

I saw her, lightly shading in something.

"Hi, I, um, didn't mean to startle you. I just saw you out here, and well, I figured...nevermind. I'm-"

"Matthews." She replied looking up from her notbook and closing it. She placed it and her pencil down on the bench she sat on. "Yeah, I've seen you around. Never struck me as the outgoing type though."

"Oh...well, there are a lot of things you don't know about me I guess." I replied. "So, what are you drawing?"

She smirked. She opened up the sketchbook and showed it to me. What I saw was amazing. It was the most realistic drawing of a rose. I almost thought it was a picture. I was speechless.

"Sometimes the outside gives me more inspiration than my normal home." She said, sighing as she placed it down.

"It's, wow. I can't even describe it." I said. She smiled.

"Thanks."

I sat down next to her and talked for a little while.

"So, saw you hangin' with Minkus today." She smirked, again. "You like him?"

"What? Oh, no, we're just friends." I replied quickly, slightly uncomfortable with the thought. Then I said a little quiter, "Besides, I like someone else."

"Oh? Who might this be?" Apparently, not quiet enough.

"Just, somebody. We're not even friends." I said, looking down at the floor. We stayed silent for a moment.

"Well, I gotta bounce Matthews. But hey, we need to hang more, you're a lot cooler than I thought." Maya said, standing up. "And hey, I'm not gonna stop tryin to guess this mystery crush of yours." I smiled.

"Yeah, I'll see you on Monday."

Then, she took off into the city to who knows where.
