1991

"That kid is real nuisance" yelled Mr.Albert at his wife. Often his step child L.Lawliet, son of his current wife and her deceased husband had been the cause of all the rifts and verbal rebuttals between them. But however till date Mrs.Lawliet had managed to calm him down. This man didn't actually hate L for he was his step son. L being born on the day of Halloween,i.e, 31st October was enough to get the superstitious man to despise the lad already.

But today after failure in his business meeting with an important client  which he believed was all because he asked L in the morning to fetch the documents to him.

"Why don't you understand that the kid is a bad omen." he paused and looked towards his wife "It's either him or me. If you so not get that rambling nuisance out of here you bet I wouldn't look after your other children" . It was kind of an advantage in this situation for L wasn't the only child. Mrs.Lawliet had 2 other children with late Mr. Lawliet.

Mrs.Lawliet said no further.sure thing she did love L but she also loved Risa and Leo her younger twin children. Mr Albert too didn't seem to have a problem with them. His only glitch was L. He couldn't tolerate the poor kid though he hadn't done anything to harm him. After all what could a 7 year old do against a 39 yr old man. But now Mrs.Lawliet too had got tired and frustrated of these daily arguments. She now rather thought that L would rather live a better life without her than with her. She angrily replied, ' If that's your will, then it's fine. Anyways my son will have a better life without you than with you". With those words she angrily stormed out of the room.

She felt tears rolling down her cheeks but now she had to stay strong. She immediately took out a page and scribbled down quickly :

     Dear Mr. Wammy,

Thank you for serving to be a good friend to  Vero Lawliet. You helped him get a decent job or else he would have remained drunk up at home. I belonged to a rich household but ran away with Vero, the son of my maid. I was young and wild that time.I didn't see the bigger picture. Now confronting all the consequences of my mistakes I have realized how naive I was. But now what is done is done. Things with Albert too are difficult for me to handle.I guess I failed to protect . I failed to be a good mother. But i will now entrust my son in better hands. Mr. Wammy i know that L has no better refuge but you. Please accept this request of helpless woman.Please.

yours truly,

Riroco Sangui Lawliet. ( L's mother had a part Japanese descent from her father's side)

Mrs.Lawliet now looked with blurry eyes. She could have got a bright future ahead for herself and her children but her wrong choices had ruined everything. After all in entire England who could look after L better that good old Wammy.

She sneaked out and posted the letter. She returned heart broken.

The three days later she woke up L at dawn and dressed him up for the last time. L unsuspiciously  woke up but realized that his mother was worried about something for she looked lost.

" Mother! mother"

Mrs.Lawliet jerked away all the thoughts and looked towards L and said "Today you will be going to a very special place ".

L looked amused for he had never gone out to any place earlier. She sneaked him outside and went to the venue Quilish Wammy mentioned in the reply.

On reaching she saw Wammy standing in a high collared over coat. It was the month of December. Also to add up it was snowing. L wondered what special place will he go to in such a weather for although he was seven, he wasn't stupid.

"Mr. Wammy I bear all faith in you. I,m entrusting my beloved son to you. Please always treat him like you are his father. I know I'm asking for too much.. but....................." she broke down and couldn't speak anymore. A cold breeze swept causing L to shiver and he slowly-slowly realized that his mother was actually abandoning him. "Mother are you " L tried to ask his eyes welling up at the thought. But his mother was already too ashamed to even face him and turned back and disappeared across the alley as quickly as her legs could carry her.

L now with watery eyes turned towards the old man standing beside him. Wammy gripped his thick gloved hands onto L's tiny mittened hands."Ah sweet boy! did you ever have a ride in a car"

L shook his head indicating no. " Ah then kiddo. We are going to have a four hour ride for we have to cover about 170 miles"

L surprisingly understood. Though he had no practical idea of the outside world but he could catch up things very well. He was highly intelligent but was born to place where this intelligence held no value.

"Hmmmm. L, if that's your name, get inside soon dear." Wammy politely asked. To L's amusement he saw a big car standing right in front of him. His tears vanished but still holding a long face entered inside the car, sitting on the back seat. Wammy sat on the driver's seat and started off on the long journey to his new future home, "THE WAMMY's HOUSE ".
