We got off the buses and I followed everyone to a circle of benches and a fire in the middle. The paper said to label your luggage but I didn't know why until I saw the bus drivers and someone with a white shirt that, said "HLEPER" on the back, go through the luggage and put it in different cabins.
People started sitting, so I sat down with Tyler. we talked for a bit more, I asked a few questions, he answered, and we did that until a man with a beer gut, and no hair stood on a stump and clapped really loud.
"Welcome campers, to Camp Snake!" he shouted and everyone cheered, "I'm Ed, your head counselor." He introduced. he had a red shirt with counselor on the back. "Okay, here's the plan for today: Frist, we are going to have you go to your cabins, unpack and make friends with your bunkmates for about an hour. Then we'll come back to the fire pit and do roll call." He added. Oh God, people are going to look at me wired when they call my name. He continued, "And for the rest of the day, we'll let you explore the camp until the cow bell, then you'll eat. After you eat you can then explore a bit more but then when you hear the trumpet, it's time for the fire to light!" Another round of cheering.
"Okay everyone, go to you cabin. Your name will be by the door to see which one you'll be in. If there are any problems, please come to me!" A lady with really long brown hair in a messy bun. She was the one who helped put the bags up.
"I'm going to go find my cabin, I'll see you later." Tyler said as he got up. I waved and looked around at everybody. Girls where on one side of camp, boys on the other. I walked to where the girls where and started reading the names.
"Hey, is there going to be a boy in our cabin?" a girl asked loud enough for the whole camp to hear. Well, at least I knew what cabin I was in.
The lady with the long hear walked over there, to check. Then she screamed, "Who's Fred Fishstick?" Yeah Fishstick is my last name.
I didn't know what to do so I just walked over there and said quietly so know one heard me except her and the girl, "That's me." The whole time I was blushing.
The girl smiled at me, maybe because I was quiet, but lucky for me, I don't think anyone else heard or saw, because everyone was looking around the boys.
"Fred? For a girl? That's cool, no one would get you mix up with someone with the same name." The lady explained.
"Hi, I'm Jess, but a lot of my friends call me Aphmau-I really don't care which." She said a held out her hand. Jess had longish black hair.
We shook hands and was about to go inside until the lady yelled, "Never mind!" I walked in fast before anyone saw me and Jess.
When I walked in, I was surprised. The cabin was HUGE. I looked around, two buck beds on both sides of the cabin, both of them had the top bunk taken. I think Jess was about to say something, but two girls walked in and looked at us.
"Alesa!" Jess screamed and ran to a girl with red hair that was long on one side, but short on the other. "Colleen" She screamed again hugging the other girl. She had long, brown, curly hair. I looked at them and realized, I was the shortest one in the cabin.
Then the one with the red hair walked towards me and put he hand out, "Hi, I'm Alesa." she said
"Hi, I'm Fred." I said as I shook her hand but looked at my feet, I was waiting for her to laugh, but she didn't. I looked up, and she gave me a warm smile. "Are you going to make fun of my name?" I asked, she just laughed.
"No, that's probably the best name ever, exceptionally for a girl." she explained. I smiled.
Then the other one came up to me, "I'm Colleen, but if you want, you can call me Miranda." She said hugging me.
I hugged back and said, "I'm Fred." and she did the same as Alesa, just gave me a welcoming smile.
For the whole hour we got to know each other while we were un packing. Jess and Alesa were seniors, and Colleen was a junior, like me. We all go to the same school and have similar likings. Me and Alesa have one bunk, and Jess and Colleen have the other. Then a girl poked her head in our cabin and said, "Hey, time for roll call." We all got up.
"Great, now everyone will know my name." I sighed
"Do you not like your name?" Colleen asked.
"Yes, I love my name, but where I used to live, I grew up with everyone, so they thought that Fred was a common girls name, so no one made fun of me. But when I got older, I realized that it wasn't as common around people who I didn't grow up with. And I never met anyone here so I don't know what to expect." I explained as we walked out to the fire pit.
Colleen nodded, and so did Alesa and Jess.
The funniest thing, is that we waited there for five minutes until all the BOYS got there. And boys make fun of girls taking forever.
"Okay," Ed said standing back on his stump. "If I call your cabin number, your name, and your bunkmates names, all of you raise you hand." He explained, we're cabin four. "I'll start with the boys: CABIN 1: Even, Brock, Craig, and Tyler." Four boys raised there hands. "CABIN 2: Adam, Jin, Ross, and Barney." Four more boys raised their hands. "CABIN 3: Tyler, Troye, Okward, and Alfie." Tyler and three other people raised there hands. "CABIN 4: Mark, Sean, Ken, and Felix." Hands go up. "CABIN 5: Ryan, Sean, Greg, and Will." More hands. "CABIN 6: Carlo, Chirs, Tyler, and Tyler." A few laughed as their hands go up. Wow, four Tylers in only six cabins. "CABIN 7: Marcel, Daithi, Johnathan, and Cry." They raise their hands, but too of them have masks, because that's normal. "CABIN 8: Lui, Dan, Phil, and Adam." The last group raises there hands. Ed checks to see if he missed any then turned to the girls, "Okay, now for the girls: CABIN 1: Zoe, Marzia, Louise, and Hannah." the group beside us raises there hands. "CABIN 2: Grace, Jenna, Tanya, and Justine." Four other girls raise their hands. "CABIN 3: Glozell, Tiffany, Mamrie, and Lilly." Four more girls raise their hands. "CABIN 4: Jess, Alesa, Colleen, and Fred." we raise our hands, I think only the girls saw me because I was sitting behind someone really tall. Ed checked if he missed anyone. "Okay, you may explore the camp and make new friends." Ed said then walked away.
All the girls had to know who was Fred, they are all really nice about it too. Like, they didn't make fun of me. But then the boys came over and started talking with some of the girls and as I looked around, I wasn't only the shortest person in our cabin, I was the shortest person at camp.
I think Tyler saw me looking around, because then he said, "Do you want to go look around the camp with me and Troye?" he asked.
I said yes, met Troye, who was a sophomore, and looked around the camp. Then we heard the cow bell and we ran to the dinning hall. We ate with my cabin. Then after that Tyler and Troye introduced me to Okward and Alfie. and the best part is that none of them made fun of name or height. It got dark and we heard the trumpet, so we ran to the fire pit. I sat with my cabin and with Tyler's cabin as well as Zoe's cabin.
We sat and talk for a bit, till Ed hit a loud drum that made all of us silent and look.
"Let me tell you a tail..."
