I sat on one of the two logs facing the lake. By my side sat Ash and on the other log sat Jake.
Ash took a deep breath and said
"It's been three months since we went to the Kaul. Since then, our village has lost 12 people. It's pretty clear that they are trying to get rid of all of us. We need to stop this...are you with me or not?" He stood up and looked at us both.
"I can't." Jake said shaking his head. "I love lily too much to leave her alone." He looked over at her playing in the snow.
"No. She can't be an orphan."
Ash nodded. I need you Jake.
"You asked me if I was in or not. I thought I had a choice."
"You do. Your my best friend I just need your support." Ash said sounding frustrated.
"And you have it. I just can't come."
Ash nodded again.
"Jade?"
"I can help. I can get Molly to get us in but I'm not really for the idea."
Jakes head snapped towards mine.
"What have they ever done to not deserve this!" Ash yelled.
I stood up.
"To deserve death. Either way if you kill our leader the guards will still work for him. It's law. They are only free 24 hours after death. They. Will. Kill. You!" I said angrily.
Jake shook his head.
"I know I'm not going but Jade they are sick people." He said walking over to lily and grabbing her hand.
"I've got to go. I have work. I'll see you later." He stormed away.
It was silent.
"Who will be our leader?" I said turning away from him.
"We need someone who cares. Someone brave. Our people are scared Ash."
"I've got a heart. I'd do anything for them."
I didn't want to say it but I was just scared of loosing Ash. I loved him. I didn't want to say that I knew he was just trying to act like a hero he didn't care about the others.
"You can't do it. You think you are more than just a person but all you are is a normal guy. You try to act all mysterious by hiding you back story but really you just..." I stopped myself when I noticed he had some how gotten in front of me.
"I don't share my past because I'm tuning from it."
"You only want to be a hero im sorry but it's true."
"It's not. I'm just sick of all of the bill we've been put through. I'm sorry Jade. I love you but I have to do this. I know you you don't want me to leave." I nodded blushing how did he know?
"I have to. With or without you."
My hands shook. I really didn't want him to go.
"With me." I whispered. A big smile spread across his face.
"But I don't want to kill."
"You won't kill. All you need to do is get me into he Kual."
"I can get in. I'm related to Molly so I can get in no problem. I can just say your family."
"No. They have records."
"Fine we will find a way."
Ash nodded. "I love you Jade." I said with a squint smile. "I really do."
"I love you too." I said back staring at the snow.
