Chapter 1-4: Impending Disaster

“Is Beca really that tough?” Cynthia Rose asked as she styled her vermilion locks sideways in front of the mirror.

Ashley lay flat on his bed as she answered, “Most of the time, yeah. Everyone despises her for that attitude of hers.” She sighed. “Little did they know, that’s just a part of who my cousin really is… like a slice of pizza – one small part of the whole,” she added.

Cynthia Rose looked over to her roommate upon hearing it. “Oh yeah? What’s the real Beca like?” She asked, growing interested.

Without hesitation, Ashley blurted out adjectives, enumerating how she knew her cousin back in the days. “Kind. Playful. Caring. Super caring. Sweet. Smart. Carefree. Talented. Very talented.”

“Yeah, I gather that your cousin’s very talented. I mean, for someone handpicked by Regine Posen, right?”

Ashley smiled at Cynthia Rose’s remark. She has always loved Beca’s impressive skills, whether it be music or other stuff. “Yes… Too bad everyone sees only what’s on the surface. That’s what Beca wanted, anyway – to be regarded as how she wants to be regarded as.”

“So, you’re saying that she poses behind a mask?”

“Yes, she does. She has her reasons anyway.” Ashley sat at the edge of her bed to face Cynthia Rose. “Look, if you’re going to try to uncover Beca’s other side, I’m not the man for the job. It’s not my story to tell.”

Cynthia Rose chuckled shortly. “No, I just… I just thought it was completely impossible for a person to be that cruel. Guess I was right, then.”

A sweet grin painted Ashley’s face as she nodded in agreement.

“Come on, roomie,” Cynthia Rose stood up and let out a hand. “Let’s go check on Denise and Jessica.”

Ashley accepted the invitation. She grabbed her silver wool cardigan before exiting the room with Cynthia Rose.

“I swear I am cutting that fucking contemptible midget’s head off!” Aubrey, still in her bathrobe, exclaimed while she dried her gold locks with a towel.

Stacie Conrad rolled her eyes for what it seemed like the twelfth time. “Aubrey, you whine about Beca, - that’s all you’ve ever done. You think of bizarre strategies of murdering the girl and that’s all it. You know, if you’re actually looking around for a pair of scissors instead of just swearing to cut off Beca’s head, you’d find yourself moving forward.”

“Scissors? I was thinking of a cudgel! Why are you opting for the less gruesome way of flicking out the tick?” Aubrey remarked, her tone pretty serious.

“That’s all you heard from what I said?!” Stacie replied in disbelief. “I’m on your team here, Aubrey. I despise that midget just as much as everyone else does. Actually if I spot Beca along the highway and I’m coincidentally wearing my high stilettos, I’d pull over and poke her with the heel of my shoe!”
