Chapter 7

~ "Humans, pathetic humans."

Silence is never a calming thing when it is shown through my father. He has not said a word to me after I eased the attack on this kingdom. He wanted me to kill, but I would never harm something without great reason. Death is not a toy, it is not something us humans should decide. If my father will not spit the first word, then I shall be the one to.

I push open the doors to the throne room and I see my father standing by a column staring into the stained glass. Even though he is no longer king, he cannot seem to let go of this room he loves to call his own. Once I take the first step into the room, he turns to me.

"Sorry," I begin, "I did not mean to startle you."

"I am never startled, just aware. Come over here boy . . . no . . come over here King Kai."

A sigh leaves my dry lips and I begin to step closer to my father. I stop and stare into his doubtful eyes. He will never convince me that I cannot be king. Once I put my mind to things, good always happens. I will be the greatest king this land has ever seen.

"What did that Kairos say?" My father asks.

"His name is Alymer, father. They have names, they are not monsters. Why do you kill them?" I ask.

"They are filth to this pure land," my father says.

"You are a very horrid man. Filth, this land is filth on its own. People like you make it no better," I add.

"The poor have nothing to offer us; they are taking up unnecessary space! You are not fit to be king." I can see it now, the stress on my father's face.

"They are people! It is not fair. We are the lucky ones, dancing in royalty while they are out there drowning in life. We do not know what it is like, so why judge them, why dismiss them? I am going to set Alymer free."

My father begins to laugh. "Set him free and someone else will take his head."

"I have no more words for you."

I avert my gaze and leave the throne room. I hate every sentence that leaves his horrid mouth. Even though I hate to admit it, he is right with his last words. If I spare Alymer, some other kingdom will kill him. He is not safe out there, no Kairos is. By being king; it is not going to protect everyone. I am not some fairytale savior.

As I approach the metal bars, I notice a bit of snoring coming from Alymer. It is not annoying, it is rather comforting. It makes him come off more human, and I like it.

My hands grab onto the metal bars and it makes a ringing sound. Alymer opens his eyes and gazes upon me. He begins to rub his eyelids then he stands. His tiny feet scatter the hay out of place. He walks over to the bars and our eyes meet. I can hear his words ringing in my head.

Are my eyes really that cold?

He chuckles as if he can read my scattered thoughts.

"Are you setting me free?" He asks. His voice sounds raspy and tired.

"Not quite. If I set you free, you will only die out there. The world is cruel."

"I can handle, I have been dealing with these killings for years. My mother is out there and I will not abandon her," Alymer explains.

"Then I will bring her here," I add.

"No, this is no place for her. She would never come here, ever! Your kindness will not change that either. I am sorry, but I must leave. If you try to stop me, then you will have to kill me."
