Maka POV
I swam around gracefully in the coral, being mindful of the sharpness of some. If my tail were to snag on them, it would not be pretty.

Suddenly, a sound drew me to the surface. My father would probably go insane if he knew how many times I had attempted to go see the humans.

It was a soft sound that rose and fell with the pitch of the tune. I found my face halfway in and out of the water trying to get a glimpse of what could possibly be making that lovely sound.

There was no land in sight, so how could this tune be made?

My answer came from a ship anchored barely a mile from where I was swimming.

The curiosity nagged at my brain. I had to know what the ship was.

I used my emerald green tail to propel me swiftly through the water, also keeping in mind of my headdress and jewelry.

It's embarrassing but I'm the princess of the sea.

After getting close to the floating hull of lumber, I poked my head out of the water.

The side was covered with scattered barnacles and worn smooth from the pounding waves that must have tormented it. I fiddled with my blue cover-up, a bit nervous at what I might find creating noise.

Hearing the sound again I perked up and listened.

The tune was dark and sad, but it was strangely beautiful to me. I found myself being gravitated to the side of the boat where it was coming from.

There, sitting on the edge, sat a peculiar looking pirate. He had white spiky hair and the most amazing blood-red eyes that I've ever seen. He was clothed in a red shirt and black trousers with a deep brown overcoat. He had black boots to cover his feet and a black headband attempting to keep the spikes of white hair out of his face.

When he pulled away from the flute he had been playing he smiled revealing a shark-toothed grin. Then, he leaned his head back and let his skin drink in the last remaining sunlight before it disappeared for the night.

I stared at him. He was probably the most amazing human I've ever seen. The boy opened his eyes and then caught sight of me. I tensed visibly in the sea.

"Are you alright? Why are you down in the water?" The boy asked.

I panicked.

Could he see my tail?

Apparently not.

"I'm fine. Who are you?" I asked.

"My name's Soul. Who are you?"

"I'm Maka. Pleased to make your acquaintance!" I slightly bowed my head. My etiquette lessons showing though our conversation.

He gave me a weird look and then flashed a small smile.

"May I swim with you?" Soul asked while slightly mocking my formality.

I hastily shook my head and his smile disappeared.

"Why not?" He questioned.

"Um..." I scrambled to find an excuse that seemed believable.

"That doesn't sound like a no." He said already throwing off his coat, boots, and headband while tossing his flute to the side.
