Maka's POV
He nuzzled my hand as I stroked his head. Soul's red eyes looked at me curiously as I smiled.

He let out a little roar that rumbled in his strong chest.

"You want to ride?" I asked.

Soul seemed to smile at me and let out an excited growl.

I ran my hand across his neck and followed the trail towards his shoulder. I slung my leg over his torso after he crouched down. I inhaled the countryside breeze that blew my way and leaned forward. My hands slid themselves onto the spike on Soul's back.

"Ready boy?"

He yipped and jumped with excitement.

I laughed and braced myself for takeoff.

"Let's go Soul!"

He made a running start and leaped into the air. His beautiful white wings stretched out and contrasted with the blue sky.  I inched forward and hung on tightly.

We soared through the sky and danced on clouds.

I threw my hands up into the air while squeezing my eyes shut.

"Soul this is amazing!!"

Soul roared and expertly blew a red ring of fire for us to fly through. My giggles escaped my lips and Soul made a rumbling noise of affection.

We circled around an island before landing.

"We've never been here before."

A metallic noise rang through the air, "maybe not but you certainly won't be coming back."

A man with black hair held a dagger to my throat. Soul tensed as he sensed the danger oozing off of the man. My forest green eyes stared into the black ones of the enemy.

"Just give up your dragon, leave him to me, and you get to keep your life."

"What do you want with Soul?" I asked, my voice strong and seemingly unafraid.

"Well you see miss, it's very hard to come about a rare white, albino dragon like him. He's a beauty. I bet his hide will go for triple the amount and his wings could make a sailor jealous." His eyes swirled with greed.

I hardened my gaze, "Soul is not,and never will be, for sale."

The man chuckled and a crazed expression crossed his face, "I was afraid you would say that."

The man quickly and in one fluid motion stabbed the dagger into my side. I gasped as my eyes shook with pain. I staggered backwards and my back collided with Soul's side. He let out a concerned grunt before crouching into a protective stance.

I went to mount his back but my legs gave out and I slid down his torso.

He stared at the bloody streak and let out an angry roar to the man trying to take another jab at me.

Soul slashed with his tail and spewed fire at the, now, running figure. He fell and I looked up at Soul. He looked down at me with fear and worry. My vision was getting cloudy and I shakily reached for Soul's muzzle. He met me half way as I scratched his hide affectionately.

He let out an agonized screech as my hand fell and I shivered from pain and the sudden cold. Soul noticed and he pulled me to his side and shielded my with his wings. The beating of wings and a roar different from Soul's comforting one echoed through the fog.

The world became dizzy and too dark. I weakly gave Soul's side a rub and last attempt at a pat before my arm fell to my side. Soul's strained roars began to fade away. I close my eyes as I fell unconscious.

-------------------------------------------------------
My eyes opened and lazily began to focus on the rafters of the ceiling.

I rested my bare feet on the floor and rubbed my head.

"Oh good. You're awake." Kid's voice traveled from across the room.

I looked up at him, "W-what happened?"

"Well lucky for you, Liz, Patty, and I just-so-happened to be passing by. We saw you fall and Soul attacking a figure so we began to land. Soul covered you with his wings and was in hysterics by the time I finally dismounted my dragons. It took forever to calm him down, he was really worried about his trainer." He added with a chuckle.

I pushed off of the soft bed and unsteadily got to my feet. Kid helped me walk until the universe stopped spinning. When I was sure of myself, I walked to the doorway and pushed open the door. A cool breeze wafted in, causing me to tremble.

I looked to my right to see Soul's gargantuan back to me, staring straight ahead, as if he was guarding the house.

I quietly tip-toed behind him, cautiously, because I knew of his amazing ability to hear anything within a 6 mile radius.

As soon as I reached the base of his back and, somehow, managed to avoid his swishing tail, I reached out my hands and yelled, "Gotcha!!!"

He let out a high-pitched squeal before launching into the air. I laughed and fell to the ground while clutching my sides. Soul gracefully folded his wings and dropped down next to me. His eyes glistened with happiness as he nudged my sides and pranced around in a circle.

I stood and gave Soul a huge hug worthy of a dragon. He laid down on the soft grass and curled around me. As we embraced, he nuzzled his nose to my cheek.

"Don't worry Soul, I'm never going to leave you." I whispered.
