The portion of this story that made headlines years ago is only a fraction of the whole. This is the whole story surrounding Duane Buck Walker.
It was the beginning of summer 1974 in San Diego. Spring fever had come and left many with high hopes for summer adventure. Among those was Buck. He was the picture of a boozy socal prison rat.
Buck was a man who had learned early on how to fashion a life of crime for himself. He was born in San Diego, but raised in the jungle of Bakersfield. By the time he was 40 years old, he'd spent 11 years in prison. He never gave up on his criminal warpath, though. Each time he got out, he was itching to fuck the whole system and everyone in it. He was released in May. He had a plan as soon as he got out, and within two weeks, it succeeded. He could finally fund his ticket to ultimate freedom.
He bought a 55 foot fishing boat, and named her Cali Queen.
After a couple days of expensive preparations and work, the boat was docked and loaded.
One morning in early June, Buck and his girlfriend Stephanie left the docks of San Diego.
