PROLOGUE

The crunch of leaves filled the forest air. "Hah!" A tiny gray kit pounced on a yellow oak leaf and shredded it with her tiny sharp claws. Another was hoping over the shredded bits, and a third was stocking a bug. The three kits were oblivious to a long, narrow, silhouette. As the shadow drew nearer and nearer, a loud caterwauling of cats filled the air. "SMOKEYKIT! RAINBOWKIT, DAWNKIT!"
A worried mewling drowned out the other sounds of the warrior cats leaping for the attacking enemy.
"Oh my kits! Look out!"
But before the kits could turn around a large brown warrior sunk their teeth into their scruffs and yanked them away just in time to see the snapping jaws of a fox.
"Dad!"
One of the kits squealed as the clan leader pounced onto the snarling fox. He ripped his claws across the foxes nose. The fox tried to fight off the leaping cats but they weighed him down. The fox ran off towards Windclan territory. The white leader headed towards the three kits huddled in a bracken bush, followed by a blue grey she-cat.
"Kits! What were you thinking!"
The she-cats tail was flicking, and her fur was bristling. But her eyes showed nothing but worry and concern. The three kits sat huddled together looking at their paws.
"Moonbreeze, are they ok? Do I need to get Gorsefoot?" Moonbreeze looked over her kits.
"Smokeykit's ear is nicked, and rainbowkit's left paw is bleeding."
She began to start licking the white kit's wound.
"We should get them back to the clan."
The white leader picked up the mottled gray kit by the scruff and headed towards the camp.
"Thank you so much Brackenfang."
The same brown warrior that had saved the kits was carrying one of the three kits back to the camp.
"Gorsefoot!"
Called a silver She-cat known as Frostdawn. She had heard the cats returning from the elders den. The three cats ran straight to the medicine cat's den. Only the leader Cloudstar came out. He leaped onto the high rock and yowled out to the clan.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here beneath the high rock for a clan meeting."
The cats all gathered around.
"There was a fox in our territory."
Yowls of concern rose in the crowd of cats.
"We chased him out into Windclan."
The yowls of fear died down.
"Though this event did not go without a problem. Three kits, my kits, snuck out of the clan and were playing near the hollow. Lucky we got there in time. They should be fine. As worried as I am about them, this can not go unpunished. These three kits have a one moon suspension on their apprentice ceremony."
After that Cloudstar leaped down from the high rock and headed for the medicine cats den.
