Chapter 2
"It's ok, Lee." Janice whispered to Lee. They were hiding out in a flower shop, behind the counter. While in hiding, Janice had spotted a revolver. However, she didn't want to hold it, not around Lee atleast.
Lee had stretched his legs out and yawned, "When are we going to get some sleep?" Janice immediately put her finger up to his lips in a gesture to shush. She peeked her head above the counter, and spotted two Zodiacs walking down the street, shotguns in their arms. They were already looking at the flower shop, but hadn't noticed Janice. She quickly ducked back into cover, and pressed her back against the counter.
"Lee," Janice whispered, her heart beginning to fasten, "I need you to be extra quiet for me, ok? Some men are coming in here and-"
The sound of the doors swinging open, and a bright chime interrupted Janice. She put her hand over Lee's mouth, and closed her own eyes. Swear was pouring down her face, she needed someone to cover her mouth from the need to scream.
The footsteps grew louder and closer. To Janice's ears, each step was an earthquake closer to death. She could hear their breaths, she could hear their whispering. She could feel their grin.
Another bright chime echoed in the shop, followed by a loud gunshot. A Zodiac's body collapsed to the ground beside the counter, staring at Janice. She removed her hand from Lee and shrieked in terror. Lee stared at the dead figure, still thinking it was a human. Another gunshot echoed, and another thump hit the other side of the counter.
"Got the fuckers!" A bright voice laughed, approaching the disguised Zodiacs. "We sure did! They had no chance." Another voice agreed, the joy in his voice. Janice gulped hard, and looked towards Lee. "Be very quiet." She mouthed, before standing up with her hands up.
Two men stood in the middle of the flower shop. They both looked similar. Short light brown hair with brown eyes, and the same height and faces of joy. "Why, why, we have ourselves a lady friend here!" The left one joked, lowering down his revolver. The right one held a magnum, but kept it upright. "We sure do, brother." The right one agreed.
"Well my lady, my name is Mark, and this here beside me is Mack." The left one said, pointing at himself then his partner. "Do you want anything?" Janice asked, being nervous. She knew nothing of these two men except they enjoyed killing those Zodiacs. That's not a lot to go with.
Mack laughed, "We save your life and you ask if we want anything? A thanks might do. Got anyone else with ya'?" Lee immediately stood up, and waved at the two men. Janice sighed, and approached Lee. "Yeah, this is Lee." She said, putting her hand on his shoulder.
Mark nodded and asked, "Want to come with us?" Janice looked up at him curiously. "Where?" She asked.
"We have our own base," Mack answered, "down in the subways. Not a big group much anymore, but hey, it wouldn't hurt to expand."
The metro trains haven't worked in months, so camping on the tracks wouldn't be much of a bad idea.
"Why don't we go, Janice?" Lee asked, looking up at Janice. She glanced down at him, then at the two men.
"Ah, Janice. Why don't you go with us?" Mark asked with a playful smile. Janice looked down at Lee, then back up. "Alright, we'll go. Just lead the way."
Mark and Mack nodded with smiles, and they exited out the shop. "Come on, let's go." Janice told Lee cautiously, holding his hand as they followed the two strangers.
The two strangers lead them three blocks East, where they found stairs down to the metros. Mark and Mack lead Janice and Lee deeper into the metro, until they were at the waiting station. Then Janice saw what had been underground for a long time.
