The daylight filtered in through the small window in Ember's room, landing on her freckled face and glaring into her blue eyes. Blinking, she sat up, raising an arm to shield herself from the light.
"Wake up, Emmie!!!" a hand grabbed Ember's head and rubbed it roughly, making her cringe in pain.
"OW!! Stop it, stop it!" cried the girl, pushing the attacker's hand away. Her sister, Neima, two years her senior, grinned and laughed at her sibling's discomfort.
"Well, you're awake now, aren't ya?" taunted Neima, standing up and putting her hands on her sixteen-year-old hips. The girl had inherited their father's looks, much like Ember, but she had also gotten something her little sister did not: their dad's propensity to be an early bird. This gave the teenager plenty of opportunities to play tricks on her sleepy younger sibling in the morning.
"Dad's making breakfast. He told me to wake you."
"You could have done it with less pain involved!" complained Ember, gingerly feeling her sore head. Neima smiled widely. "Now what would be the fun in that?" she said, then walked out of the room.
"NEEM!!" Ember threw after her sister, but the girl didn't hear her. Sighing, the girl swung out of bed and started putting her clothes on. Neima was the firstborn daughter of the Chief, next in line to be the Chieftess, had the offspring of the two most famous Night Furies of all time as her dragon, and was overall confident and beautiful. Next to her, Ember felt inadequate and lame. Her sister seemed to have everything, and Ember? She was just the Chief's other daughter. No one cared about Neima's stupid little sister.
After getting ready, the girl clambered downstairs, still rubbing the sleep from her eyes. Neima was already sitting, and she flashed her sister a mischevious grin as their father appeared.
The girls' dad was none other than Hiccup, the Dragon Master, savior of Berk and tamer of Night Furies. Apparently, a long time ago people were terrified of Night Furies, calling them 'the offspring of lightning and death itself'. The only Night Fury that fit that description, in Ember's eyes, was Comet. The female dragon had a terrifying glare and could be very fearsome indeed.
Her mate, however, was less scary. He was currenly lying on his back in the family's main room, his tongue hanging out of his mouth and his wings flopping everywhere. Just behind the mass of greyish-black scales, Ember could see the curled-up form of Comet, both the dragons' eyes' closed in sleep.
"Morning, Emmie." said her father, smiling as he slid a plate of bread over to his daughter. Neima nabbed a slice and took a bite out of it ravenously, tearing off the chunk as if the food was the only thing keeping her from dying.
"Neem," warned Hiccup as his younger child took a slice for herself and drizzled honey on it. "Be nice to your sister."
Ember rolled her eyes and Neima swallowed the bread chunk. "Aw, come on, Dad! I'm hungry!!"
"So am I, but I didn't snatch it out of somebody else's hands!" challenged the younger girl. Her sister turned and frowned, her blue eyes glinting.
"Are you challenging me, squirt?"
"Maybe I a-"
A ferocious snarl broke up the girls' argument. All three of the people at the table turned to see Comet, looking down on them with jewel-blue eyes. The female Night Fury hated it when the two argued.
"All right, all right, Comet." sighed the girls' father, taking out a dried fish and tossing it to the dragon. "They get the point." To make sure it was hammered in, he glared at the two himself, his green eyes making Ember feel guilty.
Neima stuffed the rest of the bread in her mouth and stood up, almost pushing the honeypot over. "I'm going flying on Shimmer!" she announced, gently stepping over the still-sleeping form of Toothless. "C'mon, Emmie, I'll race you and Spineclaw any day."
"Coming!" cried Ember, tearing off another chunk of honey and bread. She leaned over and kissed her father on the cheek with sticky honey lips, then shot out after her big sister.
Comet harrumphed and looked at Hiccup pointedly. He sighed.
"I don't know what's with those two either," he said.
