The sky was black the day Hera died.
The Phoenix Squadron led a raid against a small Imperial fleet for supplies, an unusually bold feat for the normally stealthy Rebellion. However, the plan went awry when the ships managed to call in a Star Destroyer, which proceeded to attack the squadron.
Among the ships shot down that day was Phoenix 1, Hera Syndulla, legendary pilot and rebel. The wreckage of her ship was scooped up by the Star Destroyer as the remainder of the squadron fled, but there was no doubt: Captain Hera Syndulla had lost her life in the line of duty.
Which is why one Kanan Jarrus was only informed of his lover's death long after she was gone.

"Kanan, I'm s..."
He blocked out the words.
Hera... dead?
It couldn't be. It wasn't possible. Next thing he knew, she'd be walking through the door, smiling and teasing him, like always.
But she didn't.
Kanan stared at nothing, not seeing Ezra and Sabine's sympathetic faces, not feeling the hand gently clapped on his shoulder.
Hera...was dead.
It felt wrong, somehow, like there was a void in his heart, a space that had been reserved for knowing that somewhere, one Twi'lek had wanted him with her. A space solely for the thought that there was someone out there who loved him and would do anything for him, a feeling he returned with equal intensity; and now it was gone.
She was gone, forever. Just like his master, and like everyone he had held dear to his heart, the one person he loved most in the world had left him. Hera was his guiding light, a comforting presence where no comfort was to be found, love in a world that had shown him nothing but hatred and cruelty. Without her, he was lost.
Kanan knew he was supposed to believe that 'her spirit was still with him in the Force', and all that, but he couldn't. The horrible, horrible agony in his heart just kept reminding him that Hera was dead, that he'd never see her or hold her or feel the warmth of her body ever again.
It hurt.
He pushed away the sympathetic hands and walked away, walked back to the ship she used to fly with him. He felt hot, miserable tears sting at his eyes and he wiped them away brusquely, even though they were swiftly replaced with more. Every inch of the Ghost reminded him of Hera, all the memories formed and arguments raged and nights spent together through the star-speckled expanse of space.
They had flown away in that ship all those years ago, when they met for the first time. When he bumped into one Twi'lek on a rebel mission and his life was changed forever. He first had thought she was an easy catch, but instead he found someone beautiful and smart and funny and strong, someone who he soon became smitten with.
And she loved him back. Kanan had experienced more tragedy in his life than any man should, but every day when he saw her smiling face he realized that his place in the galaxy was right by her side.
He went and sat down in his chair, the one right next to where she would pilot the ship and laugh with him. There was a nagging feeling when he looked at the empty spot, the feeling that something was desperately wrong, and it was. Hera was dead. How could anything be right ever again?
Was he the captain now? No, no, no, don't even think that, erase that thought and never dare imagine it again. It was just one more step towards removing her memory, like how she was so cruelly removed from his life.
The truth was horrible- that Hera Syndulla would not be remembered. Her name would not be repeated through the planets, echoing with the notes of heroism that she rightly deserved. She would be noted down as the lost captain of the Phoenix Squadron, heroically vanquished fighting the Empire; and over the years the name Captain Hera would fade from the lips and hearts of the rebellion, except for one man who now had a gaping hole in his heart.
He stood. The tears had ceased, but the pain had not.

The sky was red the day Kanan died.
The small rebel section known as the Ghost Squadron dispatched its two Jedi, a master and Padawan, to a mission on the planet of Morsona. While there, their mission went wrong when the pair were ambushed by Inquisitors. Taken by surprise, the Jedi fought back, but ever since the death of Hera Syndulla, his co-captain and lover, two months before, Kanan had never been the same.
Although his Padawan managed to avoid severe injury, Kanan was fatally injured in the fight, and died on the Ghost a few minutes later.
Reports of his last moments state that he was smiling happily, and looking off into the distance, as if there was someone only he could see waiting for him.
