A/N: Oh my gods, I have 1k reads on this story. I never thought this would happen. Thanks so much to everyone who has read, voted, and commented.
(Two weeks later)
Two weeks at the new base, May has been sending me to give paperwork to certain people, like agent Hill. I was bringing her some papers when I stopped by her office to see if she was there and there was a man sitting across from her, so I decided to wait for her to be done. I could hear their conversation threw the glass wall.
"What does S.H.I.E.L.D. stand for, Agent Ward?" Hill asked him.
"Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division." He told her.
"And what does that mean to you?" Hill asked him.
"It means someone really wanted our initials to spell out Shield." He said and Hill gave him a look that said "try again".
"It means we're the line... between the world and the much weirder world. We protect people from news they aren't ready to hear. And when we can't do that, we keep them safe. Something turns up," he reached into his jacket pocket and grabbed something out of it and slid it across the table, " like this chitauri neural link, we get to it before someone bad dose."
"Any idea who Vanchat was planning to sell it to?" Hill asked standing up and placing the link in a box another agent was holding.
"I'm more interested in how this Rising Tide group found out about it. I thought they were just hackers. What changed?" Ward asked.
"Everything's changing. A little while ago, most people when to bed thinking that the craziest thing the the world was a billionaire in a flying metal suit. Then aliens invaded New York and were beaten back by, among other, a giant green monster, a costumed her from the '40s, and a god." Hill told him.
"I don't think Thor's technically a god." Ward tried to reason.
"Well, you haven't been near his arms." Hill said and I can't say she's wrong. "The battle of New York was the end of the world. This, now, is the new world. People are different. They have access to tech, to formulas, secrets they're not ready for."
"Why was I pulled out of Paris?" Ward asked.
"That, you'll have to ask Agent Coulson."Hill said.
"Uh, yeah. I'm clearance level six. I know that.. Agent Coulson was killed in action, before the battle of New York. Got the full report." Ward said.
"Welcome to level seven." Coulson said coming out of the shadow in a dark corner. " Sorry, that corner was really dark, and I couldn't help myself. I think there's a bulb out."
Agents Hill, Ward and Coulson walked out of the office and down the hall towards the elevator and since I had papers for Hill I followed them. They got into the elevator after Ward and none of them knew I was there. When the doors opened and we got out Ward started asking questions.
"Director Fury faked your death, to motivate the Avengers."
"Well, the death of a common ally is a particularly effective team builder. As well as finding a long lost sibling." Hill said as we walked towards a door.
"Say cheese." The computer said and pictures showed up on the screen of Coulson, Ward, Hill and myself as a German shepherd with my cover name.
"Plus, it wasn't that much of a stretch. I stopped breathing for about 40 seconds." Coulson said opening the door.
"Eight. It gets longer every time you tell it." Hill corrected him.
"Yeah, well, you get shanked by the asgardian Mussolini, you can tell it your way. I was looking at the big white light, and it felt a lot longer than eight seconds." Coulson said as he and Ward picked up their badges. I stood behind them waiting for them to continue walking.
