Turning the corner I was relieved to see a crowd of people having a little festival of sorts. Probably to celebrate the on coming holidays.
I slipped into the crowd catching my breath for a moment before I pulled out my phone to call aunt Stella. The phone seemed to take a year to connect.
"Hey birthday girl!" Stella chimed over the phone. Calming me down a bit.
"Stella can you please come get me. Its getting chilly and dark and I don't want to walk home alone right now." I tried to stay calm but my words fumbled out of my mouth confusingly.
"Of course Gwen where are you?" I could hear the worry in her voice. She was basically a sister to me, my only family just as I was her only family.
Looking around the corner I saw I was on cherry lane. I walked back into the party goers and explained to aunt Stella where to find me. The party looked like it had only begun and would go on late into the night so I was safe for now. I actually joined in on a few of the games and drank a cup or two of their hot cocoa, no one really seemed to care that I had intruded.
"Gwen!" I heard Stella from the road. She sounded even more worried now. I quickly said thank you to a few of the people and headed to her car. "So I have a surprise for you when we get home," she exclaimed as I was shutting the car door.
I let out a sigh, "please tell me its anything but that dreadful pink shirt you where looking at the other day."
"No its even better!" She gave me a look of encouragement as we pulled away from the lights of the party.

We made it home with no sign of the stranger following us. I didn't bother to mention it either. Stella would have a fit and call the police to check it out. She was sometimes a little paranoid about things like that.

Getting out of the car I looked up to the house with a bit of worry. The lights were off and there seemed to be no one lurking around. I looked over to Stella who had come around the car and seemed over excited. Shoving me towards the house she rambled about my surprise. She had no idea how scared I was to enter our dark house.

I took my keys out and opened the door for her. She rushed past me and ran towards the kitchen. I followed her reluctantly after closing and locking the front door.

"Gwen! I hope you love it!" She squealed as I rounded the corner into the kitchen. I saw a very large box and a beautiful cake. "First cake and then your presents."
The cake was little and round. Just enough for me and Stella to share. She seemed to enthusiastic eating her cake in a rush after awkwardly sing Happy birthday to me. She probably not only bought me that pink shirt but a matching skirt. I finished my cake and prepped myself for fake excitement as she put the plates and cake away.
"Alright I figured you could use this after I received this invitation some time ago," she handed me an envelope and pulled the box on to the island. She cleared her throat, "read it out loud!"
Sighing I began, " Dear Mrs. Gwendolyn Hawthorn, we would like to formally invite you to our Midnight Ball. You were selected by our director as an honored guest. We hope to see you on the night of the twenty third. Please wear formal attire. Signed Mrs Rosemary L. Thomas."
Stella hardly containing her excited burst of giggles pushed the large box towards me. I took the lid off slowly, looking up at Stella who nodded me on. I didn't know what to think but this gorgeous black dress took my breath away. I pulled it up to myself and spun around.
"Stella this dress is wow but I don't know about this whole ball thing" I said putting the dress back down in the box. She looked like all her life energy had been sucked out of her.
"What, no, why. No no no!' She started hyperventilating, "This was something your parents wanted for you. To go to their annual ball and to dance and meet boys and you have to go." She was crying now. She was probably right about them wanting me to go out and have fun but had they held the ball before? Did stella go when she was young? I was never told of such things. Never told really anything about them actually. I suddenly had an idea about the whole ordeal.
"If you tell me more about my parents I will go to the ball." I offered. Stella blankly stared at me. Her mouth fumbling for words that she couldn't find. "Stella?"
"I don't know much honestly, but if you like I could tell you what I did know about them." She smiled sadly pulling out our only two kitchen stools to sit on. I sat and nodded eagerly in agreement.
"Well your mother looks exactly as you do but she was very tall and I would suppose not as clumsy as you are. She was adventurous and a bit on the wild side. Your father on the other hand I didn't know much about him. One day he just came and swept Jade off to god knows where. He was quite the gentleman though." Stella sighed and put the lid back on the box containing my new ball gown. "Alright Gwen I'm off to bed I have an important meeting in the morning. I love you, don't stay awake too long." She shuffled off slowly to her room. Talking about mom must be really hard on aunt Stella.
I gathered the box into my arms and walked back to my room analyzing the information I received tonight. I layed the box down on my desk and changed into pajamas quickly ready to get some sleep. Something bothered me though. I felt as if someone was watching me. I glanced out my window and saw a dark figure glaring up from the other side of the street. I tugged the curtains closed and jumped under my covers. There seemed to be something not human about the person standing down there but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
I fell asleep after some hours of worrying and thinking.
