Dinner was good. Your mom asked how was your first day at college, you were out of words at first and Vernon just smiled sympathetically at you. Your mom was laughing hearing De..Vernon joked. It was strange because a smile suddenly plastered on your face seeing Vernon and mom get along in a blink of an eye. It was good to see your mom was genuinely happy after dad left. You don't know how much you missed your dad, you can't expressed with words. You wish he hadn't left and live happily ever after with your mom and you but guess anything that's good never ever lasts. From that you knew nothing ever lasts.
You zoned out most of the time, when your mom asked, you just answered with a simple nod and 'yeah'. Vernon knew, he knew something was off. You smiled at him but not a genuinely smile. Your mind kept thinking about your dad and Ivan. Yes, Ivan. After a good long time, why now he decided to come back. The things he has ever done to you was terrible, You just can't believed that he was yours. 'I'm such a fool' you thought.
"Mia?" mom asked while a smile plastered on her face.
"Ah- what? Yes?" you stuttered
"Is there something wrong? You have been zoned out for a while and you look pale" your mom asked worriedly. "Are you alright, honey?"
"I..I'm good mom. I was just nervous for my second day in college you know, new friends and some stuff" you nod and lied smoothly.
"Oh, silly Mia. You will be fine and I know how you feel. Back in my day......" your mom continued her story.
You glanced at Vernon. He already looked at you, his eyes said something that he didn't buy your bullshit.
After your mom told her story when she was at college. She gathered eveything up and cleaned the table. You washed the dishes in the sink. You wiped your hands using a dishcloth. When eveything was cleaned you stepped out from the kitchen to the living room.
"I'm so tired today. I'm sorry Vernon I can't hang out with you like a teenager I am." your mom pouted.
"It's okay ma'am. I have Mia to accompany me here. Right Mia?" Vernon wiggled his eyebrows.
You just shrugged and smiled in return.
"Alright then. I'm going to bed now." before she stepped on the stairs, she turned her back on you "I almost forgot. I'll be upstairs but that doesn't mean you two can do anything naughty. My ears are pretty sharp." she eyed you.
"Mommmm!" you whined.
Vernon stiffened beside me.
"Oh and good night Vernon, Mia. I love you" then she disappeared.
"I love you too" you whispered then you collasped on the couch. Ahhh heaven
"I'm still here. You know that right?" Vernon sat beside me.
"Yeah yeah, I know. I'm just tired, you can do whatever your heart desires." you murmured staring up the ceiling.
"You know I'm jealous of the ceiling," he said.
You sat up confused.
"You should be looking at me when I'm talking to you not at the ceiling," now he was staring at the ceiling.
"It's just plain and white what's so good about it?" now his eyes darted back to you.
"I..-" he cut you off.
"That's not my real question. I just wanted to know, you kind of zoned out when we were having dinner with your mom and my question is, what was on your mind?" he asked
"I was just thinking"
"Thinking about what?" he asked curiously.
'Should I tell him or shouldn't I' you thought. You really don't want to talked about your dad neither does Ivan. When Ivan came approached you at the locker, begged to come back, you feel numb. How dare he-
"Mia?" he waved his hand in front of you. "You zoned out again" he sighed. He sat closer to you and wrapped his hand around your shoulder.
You sighed. You lean your head on his shoulder. He rubbed your arm gently and that time you lost it you let everything out.
"Hey hey shhh. What's wrong, Mia?" he held you tight and kissed on the top of your head gently.
You were crying. You held him close and snuggled into his neck. You don't know why you were crying. The thought of Ivan makes you weak and you sure as hell can't go back to the past to fixed it. You were too naive, too innocent at that time. You'd believe everything and you thought everything was happiness when you were with him.
You still remembered when Ivan said he loved you, you thought he meant it but oh boy you thought wrong. All he did was broke you into into a million pieces. Everything was fine at first, you felt butterflies when you with him. He would always bought you flowers, always texted you every night. Brought you to places you've never been.
When you said you loved him. He was so happy yet he promised you he will always took care of you and loved you until the day you die. He promised you the world but his promised were meant to be broken.
His life were a mess. His parents were getting a divorced, he never told me why. He was out of control hell he couldn't even functioned well. When you wanted to comfort him and came near him, he finally showed you his true colors. He hit you, kicked you. Saying that it was all your fault.
He changed.
He never texted you a good night, never bought you flowers anymore. No more exchanging 'I love you's'. All you get was a new bruised. That was his present, a brand new present. You tried to break everything off with him but he never let you. He'd gone crazy, he pulled your hair roughly saying that you was his.
You can't take it anymore. You went to your mother house and told her everything. Mom was so furious, she even threatened Ivan to stay away from you. And that was it. He went straight to jail. He was sorry for everything he did to you but you refused to believed him.
You've never met him until that incident. You wanted to erased everything you had with him and you almost make it to the finished line but he stopped you.
Ivan stopped you.
He dragged you back.
"It's okay, Mia. I'm here. Everything is going to be alright. Don't cry, love" Vernon soothed you.
"Vernon" you choked.
"Shh, just let it out" he rubbed your back non stop
That's how your night goes. You crying, Vernon comfort you. Then everything went pitch black. You felt someone carried you and put you in bed. You felt the bed dip, "You know I'm always here for you, whenever you need me, Mia."
"And I do remember you"
Then you felt something soft pressed onto your forehead. "Goodnight, baby."
