"Emek, no! Something must be wrong. There's no way--"
"Cypress, for the last time, you have to calm down. Just trust me--"
"I do trust you! But this is crazy!"
"Cypress, this is completely normal. It just doesn't happen very often. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, and no reason to deny it. Are you really willing to deny your mate?"
"Emek! He is not my mate! There's no way! I'm not even gay, Emek! How is that supposed to work? He. Is. Not. My. Mate."
"Do you really want to deny him, Cypress? It will cause both of you much pain and suffering. Like I said, there is nothing wrong with it. The Moon Goddess works in strange ways, sometimes, but you have to trust her."
"I do trust her, but this must be some sick joke or something. At least I'm hoping. Maybe she got me mixed up with someone else, and maybe if I wait a little longer, I'll find my real mate."
"Cypress, it doesn't work like that. Finding your mate is a one-time thing. No do-overs, none of this other nonesense you've been talking about."
"But, it can't be him. It can't be." I shrugged down into the couch that was against the wall in Emek's living quarters. He gets his own area of the pack house, with a few rooms including his bedroom.
"You said you talked to him through your mind connection? And he reacted to it?"
"I... Well," I sighed. "Yeah, but I mean couldn't that just be because it was an emergency? Life-or-death situation? Something like that?"
"I'm sorry, but that's not how it works. You should go back to him, speak to him. In human form. I think it would be best if--"
"Emek, I can't. I can't do this. I think I'm going to go away for a few days."
Emek sighed deeply, "I guess... I guess if that's what you think is best, Cypress. I don't think it's the best idea, but if you think so. I want you to be able to make your own decisions in the future, so I'll let you do this. Just be sure to come back in a few days. Three days, or we're sending someone to find you."
"Okay, thank you Emek."
"I still don't think it's the right thing to do, Cypress, but it it's going to help you clear your mind, then so be it."
With that, I stood and walked out of the small office-like room. This couldn't be right. Ryn couldn't be my mate. He's a boy. And I'm a boy. Two boys don't become mates. I mean, I know the Moon Goddess has plans for each of us individually, but I really hope that she's just like us and makes mistakes now and then. Becaue I don't think I could walk up to my family, my pack, with a boy, a human boy at that, and tell them he was my mate.
I started toward the forest, changing to my wolf before I even made it to the tree line. I ran hard and fast, until I made it to another tree line. I changed back to human form before walking out into the road, crossing it and walking into the little corner coffee shop.
Hailey was there to greet me, as always. I went and sat up on a bar stool like I usually do, and waited for her to bring me my usual.
Hailey seemed extra happy today, I noticed as she walked out with my coffee. She seemed extra perky, maybe her cheeks were a little rosier. Maybe her dirty-blond hair that she worked so hard to keep the curls out of was a little straighter. It almost made me not want to tell her what was going on. I didn't want to ruin her mood.
"How's it going, Cypress?" she asked.
I decided to stick with my plan to not unload on her. I'd let her do the talking today instead. I could tell she had something bundled up inside.
