I followed Jax's advice. When Tig came home, I watched him as he played with Makayla, enticing fits of giggles from her every few minutes. He would be one hell of a father, should this baby turn out to be his. It was beautiful.
He turned and looked at me, Mak in his arms. "Is something wrong, Alice?" he asked, a smile fading from his face.
I smiled. "Um, actually, I have some news."
His smile came back. "Ok, what's up?"
"Well," I gave a little shrug. "I'm pregnant, Alex."
His smile became an astonished one. "Are you serious? When did you find out?" He walked over and wrapped an arm around me.
"This morning. Morning sickness already. We should be in for a fun few months." I gave him a side hug.
"Wow... This is amazing. Wait 'til everyone hears about this!" He kissed my forehead.
Horrified, I shrieked, "NO!"
He looked at me strangely. "What? What do you mean?"
I had to collect myself before he read too far into things and found out my secret. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to freak out. I just... I just think it would be better to keep it quiet for awhile. Since the last time..." I took a deep breath. "Since last time, we lost our baby."
He hugged me tight. "Alright. We will keep it quiet. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you. This is just really good news."
I looked up at him and ran my hands through his hair. "I know. And you'll be a great father."
It looked away somberly. "You know I have two daughters, right?"
I looked at him, shocked. "You... you do?"
"Dawn and Fawn. Needless to say, I failed pretty bad when it came to being there for them. But this time, it will be different. Mak and this new baby will be my fresh start. I will be a better man this time." He kissed me gently.
"You'll do great. I know it."
--------------------------------------------------------
The next few months passed about as I predicted. Morning sickness was horrible for the first two months, and it miraculously let up for the third. By the middle of my fourth month, it was becoming quite obvious I was expecting.
Tig came home one night and informed me that the club was having a get-together, with everyone bringing their families. Bouncing Mak on his knee, he looked at me expectantly. "What, Alex?" I asked.
"It's pretty much impossible for you to pass yourself off as getting fat. I think we should tell everyone ."
Dreading having to face Jax, I tried to think of a way to back out of it. "Well, I'm not sure if that's really the place for Mak. Plus she needs to keep her bedtime."
"Oh, come on, Alice. It's really important to me. And it's one night. Is something going on?" He looked at me suspiciously.
"No, you just know how I feel about this club stuff. I'm not sure I really want to get involved. Or have Mak involved." I leaned against the counter, my arms crossed across my chest.
"Just this once. We all have families. We're normal people. Just come and hang out for a little while. If you get uncomfortable, we can take you and Mak home. Deal?"
Knowing that he would keep asking questions, I finally agreed. "Fine. We'll go. Will you come pick us up, then, please?"
"Of course. I want us to go together as a family. I will come get you guys around five."
