(Tig POV)
I watched in horror as bullets from the Calaveras' gunfire tore through my pregnant girlfriend. As everyone else returned fire, Jax and I hurried out to Alice, laying in a crumpled heap on the ground. Jax covered me as I turned her over.
She had been shot in both shoulders, the left side a through-and-through. She was pale, her eyes glassy and chest heaving. "Alice? Baby, can you hear me? Oh, god..."
Coughing, she managed to say, "Jax... get Mak... in the truck..."
"Alright, hon, hold on." He pried the door to the truck open. Gently, he picked up a screaming Mak, then knelt down beside Alice. "She's OK, Alice. She's right here." His eyes wandered down towards her legs, confusion on his face. "We need to check her for other wounds, Tig."
Cradling her head in my lap, I asked, "Why? What's wrong?"
Realization rushed over his face. "Oh god... Something is wrong with the baby! She's bleeding!"
"Shit! Someone call an ambulance!" I turned back to Alice, stroking her hair. "Baby, stay with me! It will be OK, please, just stay here!
----------------------
It took forever for the ambulance to arrive. Surprisingly, Tara followed the ambulance in and left with them, trying to stabilize Alice and the baby. Jax called Gemma to come and get Makayla, who we left with Clay and Bobby.
Jax and I raced to the hospital together, bursting into the emergency room. A nurse met us, stopping us in our tracks. "Can I help you?"
"We're here with the pregnant woman just brought in," Jax explained. "Is Dr. Knowles with her?"
"I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to disclose any information about patients to anyone who's not family." She started to walk away.
"Wait, goddammit!" I shouted, taking a step forward. When she stopped and turned around, I continued. "Now, I'm her man, and one of us is the baby's father. So, tell us how she's doing!"
She looked at us, somewhat disgusted. Finally, she huffed and replied, "Dr. Knowles is doing her best to close the wound in her left shoulder. She will be surgically removing the bullet from the other side as soon as she is stable enough. As far as the baby is concerned, they have managed to stop the labor, and the baby's vital signs are normal. Right now, the doctor is trying to determine if any internal damage has been done due to the shock. You are welcome to wait in the waiting room, and I will let the doctor know you're here." She pointed towards the waiting room and hurried off.
--------------
Four hours in the waiting room later, Tara came in, exhausted. "Well, she got lucky. We were able to bring her out of shock fast enough to avoid any organ damage. The baby seems to be fine, but there's only so much we can see at this point. We stopped her premature labor, but she will need complete bed rest until labor starts naturally. Makayla will stay with Jax and I."
"How long until she gets to come home?" I asked.
"I want to keep her for a few days, so we can monitor the baby and her shoulders can begin healing. She'll also need her dressings changed every few hours for the first few days. It's less stressful this way." She sat down next to Jax. "There's a fold-out bed ready and waiting for you."
"Thanks, Tara. Is she awake yet?"
"She should be soon. I'll bring Mak around in a day or so."
Nodding, I took my leave of her and Jax. Entering the room, my heart broke. Still pale, she was completely still. Her shoulders were both wrapped and oxygen was in her nose. A monitor was showing her heartbeat, slow and steady. The machine next to it was monitoring the baby's. I stood next to her, kissing her forehead.
