I ran around the woods, stumbling in the semi-darkness. I was yelling for Alice over and over, hoping she would hear me and yell back. I wandered and wandered. She could be anywhere in these woods. A little ways away, I could hear Jax yelling, too. With all of us searching, we HAD to find her. Finally, when I was thinking of moving to a completely different area of the woods, I heard her soft cry in response to Jax. It was coming from my right, so I took off running, yelling her name.
Jax and I got into the small clearing at the same time. She was sitting with her back to a tree, facing the north. A sweatshirt was bundled up against her chest. She had apparently wrapped Makayla up in her sweatshirt to keep her warmer. No wonder she was so cold. Jax and I ran over to her and kneeled next to her.
She was white as a ghost, except for the rosy red in her cheeks. She looked like she was dead, but we could see the puffs of breath coming out in the chilly air. We looked into the bundle cradled next to her chest at saw Makayla, warm and cozy, still sleeping.
Jax looked at me then gently took Makayla from Alice’s arms. Instantly, she flew awake and started snatching at the air wildly. Her eyes were glazed over and had a far-away look. All she knew was her baby was no longer in her arms, so her motherly instinct took over.
I grabbed her arms and tried to calm her. She tried to struggle against me, but she was really weak from the cold. I tried to look into her eyes. “Alice! Stop, Alice! It’s us! Jax and Tig! We’re here to get you out of here! Calm down!”
A little bit of recognition entered her eyes and she faded back into her sleep, collapsing into my arms. I picked her up and Jax and I started walking towards the town. It was a hard struggle, since Alice was dead weight. But I managed. When we broke through the trees, Jax started making the calls to the others. Then he called Tara, his old lady. She was a doctor at the town hospital.
When everyone joined us, we decided it was better to take Alice and Mak to the clubhouse, where they would be safe for sure. Tara would meet us there and look them both over. I carefully handed Alice over to Opie as I got on my bike and started it. He handed her back to me, and I took off for the clubhouse. Jax would take care of Makayla. He was good with kids.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I pulled up to the clubhouse just in time to see Piney show up. He gave me a strange look before coming over to help me. “What in God’s name did you do the poor girl, Trager?!” I handed her off to him as best as I could.
“She’s under club protection, like we said. Someone broke into their house last night, and she and her daughter took off into the woods. She is freezing… Tara is going to come by and check them both over.” I shut off my bike, put it on the kickstand, and took Alice back from Piney. He followed along with me as I hurried her to the clubhouse.
Once inside, I took her and placed her on one of the couches. Piney went and grabbed a fresh blanket from the laundry room. I wrapped her up in it, not knowing if it was the right thing to do or not. I kind of started to panic. I didn’t know what to do for her, and it was killing me. Within moments, I heard the others show up.
Jax came in first, carrying a now-awake Makayla. She clung to Jax, eyes wide, obviously terrified. When she saw her mommy, she started to cry out and reach for her. Jax walked over and held her next to her. She quieted down instantly. Jax looked up at me. “Tara will be here shortly.”
Ironically, Tara walked in right after Jax spoke. She took a look at Alice and Makayla, a weird look on her face. True to her form, she didn’t say anything about the situation. She simply asked, “Who should I look at first?”
“Probably the mother. She was exposed to the cold for at least an hour and a half. She wrapped up Makayla and kept her warm.” Jax stood up with Makayla, who instantly started howling at being taken away from her mother. Until she saw me, that is. Then she started fussing and holding her little arms out to me. Jax held her out to me. I didn’t really want to take her, kids weren’t my thing. “Dude, you may as well take her. She may stop crying then.”
Reluctantly, I took her from Jax. Makayla stopped crying instantly and put her head on my shoulder. I awkwardly patted her back, turning to watch Tara work on Alice. I was very worried about her. I still didn’t know why this girl seemed to be so damned important to me.
Everyone stayed silent while Tara looked her over. It took her about ten minutes; taking her temperature, measuring her pulse, taking her blood pressure. When she was finished, she tucked her in tighter and turned to me. “She has hypothermia. You need to keep her hydrated and keep her warm. Take her temperature often, until it gets back to normal and stays normal for at least an hour. If there are any changes for the worse, you will have to bring her to the hospital. Now, let’s check over the baby.” Tara walked over to me and tried to take the baby. Makayla put up a fight and refused to go.
I sat down in a chair and moved Mak to sit on my lap. Tara gave her a full check up and pronounced her perfectly healthy. After Tara left, she started fussing. I couldn’t do anything to make her happy. I was at wit’s end when Jax finally said, “She’s probably hungry, dude…”
“Well… what do I feed her? Do I order her a pizza?” I looked down at her, completely confused. Sure, I had two daughters, but I never really was around. I had no idea how to take care of kids.
The guys just stared at me in disbelief. Apparently a pizza wasn’t the way to go. I shrugged and wracked my brain. Finally, Jax snickered and said, “Why don’t you ask my mom to help you out? You know how she loves kids…”
I was out the door before he finished his thought. I headed across to the office, just in time to see Gemma walk in and close the door. Knocking on the door, I pushed the door open. Gemma turned around, surprise on her face. “Oh, Tiggy, you didn’t!”
I was confused at first, but finally realization dawned on me. “What? You mean..? No! No, I didn’t! This is the baby of the girl we offered protection to… Someone broke into their house last night, so Alice ran off into the woods to be safe. She’s over in the clubhouse. Tara said she’s got hypothermia, but Makayla here is fine. She’s just hungry, and I don’t know what to feed a baby…”
“So you need my help, hm?” She smiled and walked over to see Makayla. She smiled at her and started talking to her. Soon Makayla warmed up to her. She took her from me and headed towards the clubhouse. I followed obediently. When we got into the kitchen and dining room, I sat down in one of the chairs. Gemma handed Makayla back to me then rummaged around in the cupboards.
Perturbed, she turned around. “We have no suitable food here. I’m going to go to the store and get some. You try to keep her as happy as you can ‘til I get back.” She headed out the door to get her purse and leave.
I sat there with Makayla, her looking up at me. “Well, we’re back to where we started. Think you can handle a half an hour more?”
She started crying.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
By the time Gemma came back, I was about at wit’s end. Mak was screaming, and I didn’t know what to do. I sat her on the table and tried to make faces at her, anything to make her laugh. Nothing worked. As soon as Gemma stepped into the kitchen, I was on my knees. “Oh, please, Gem, make her stop! I don’t know what to do!”
Rolling her eyes, Gemma put the bags up on the counter. Grabbing a spoon and a jar of baby food from one of the bags, she turned around. “Well, you hold her and I’ll feed her. Alright? Then she’ll be much happier.”
I grabbed Mak off of the table top and sat her on my lap. She started jumping on my knee when Gemma opened the jar of food, and eagerly opened her mouth for the spoon. She happily ate the first spoonful, then squealed for more. The jar was easily gone in a couple minutes. She started crying for more, so Gemma grabbed another jar.
After she ate half of the second jar of food, Mak started rubbing her eyes and yawning. Taking Gemma’s advice, I took Mak to the living area and plopped down in the rocking chair. Grabbing a blanket from the floor next to the chair, I covered us up and starting rocking. Makayla was asleep in a few minutes. Before too long, I could feel myself getting drowsy. Kicking up the footrest, I closed my eyes and soon drifted off myself.
