What to do, what to do, what to do?
Was I insane for coming back?
All of these thought raced through my mind. I was nervous, the people I grew up around weren't big on forgiveness. That was obvious from the many scars I carried. Truth is though, I don't have anywhere else to go, coming home is my last option and I wasn't happy about it.
Trekking to the front of an oh-so-familiar gate. The paint job was done sparingly and as a result, the red paint was flaking off in my hands. I felt remotely disgruntled as I slammed a fist on the rough wood. "Hey open up!" I roared. In the fleeting seconds after my outburst a head appeared above me and I smirked. "Well, well, well, if it isn't a Sandoval. What do you want Beckett?" he asked.
His hair was a dark red almost brown with fleeting bits of light brown mixed in. His eyes were a dark calming blue that twinkled with mischief. I grinned back but it looked more like a grimace, "Seems you rid yourself of your baby fat, eh Spence?" I called. His mouth twisted into a lopsided frown. Disappearing, the gate opened a few seconds later, revealing a huge city. There was Spence standing in front of me, his slack style still playing in as his guard uniform was sloppy. "We won't speak of that."He grunted and turned to leave. Smirking I followed him.
I sighed; I had been here in the city for a couple of hours now. All in all my anxiety slowly disperesed and I became more comfortable around familiar sights. When my parents caught sight of me however they were quick to bring out the kitchen knives. Shaking it off, Spence let me stay with him.
"Alrighty, we're here. No cracks on my pad."
"No promises~"
"I was afraid of that..."
We walked into his home and I made myself comfortable on the couch. "Thanks for letting me stay here with you."I said. Spence grunted in reply as he put out some sheets for me to put on the couch. I narrowed my eyes as Spence nervously flitted around his home. "Are you alright?"I asked. He jerked in surprise and then nodded. Eventually he slunk off to his room and I began to try and fall asleep.
The first thing I registered was the blaring siren and I was instantly awake. "Spence! What's going on?"I called. Heavy footsteps thundered on the floor as Spence appeared tugging the belt of his uniform closed. "Intruders! Let's go!" He called as we raced out of the house. The sky was a sick color that reminded me of a puke cream. Flames danced in enourmous sillouhets as smoke joined the sky, hazing the horizon. I coughed painfully as I tried to follow Spence. However I soon lost him and was just running in a random direction.
Eventually the haze cleared out into a less smokey area and I coughed violently into my hand as I took in some cleaner air. "Beckett!" Spence called. He raced into the clearing, his clothes torn and saturated with blood. I wondered if it was the enemy's or his own... Right behind him however were three persuers. All three of them had dark hair and scars on some part of their face. The one in the middle had a red bandanna tied around his neck, the one on the left had a hat on, and finally the one on the right had a sword on his back. Whipping out my foldable staff I grabbed Spence behind me. "Stop right there!"I warned and held out my staff threateningly. All at once they halted and warning bells went off in my head.
"Hey Monte, can we kill her?"The one with the sword asked. "Well, she is my target, so I guess..." The one with the bandanna shrugged. I grit my teeth and didn't budge, "What do you mean? Who's looking for me?"I asked. "Why Mr.Slade of course darlin..."Monte sneered. I looked at him still confused. However before I could react the third guy with the hat spoke, "Can we just get this over with? I'm bored..." He sighed. "Patience my dear Villiers."Monte replied. "NO, now."Spence said.
I whipped around to face him when a knife was at my throat in an instant. Spence didn't look happy, but he certainly wasn't going to let me go. I knew that much. "Well... go on."Monte said as he and the other two hung back. "Sorry about this Beckett..."He whispered and arched the blade expertly across my flesh, searing it into a ragged gash. Only a gasp managed to exit my throat as pain seared through my very core. Spence dropped me to the ground and I began to heave painfully trying to take in oxygen. "...Why?"I croaked. He looked down at me and the last thing I saw was a knife darting towards my face.
