The Truth Hurts
“We will be visiting six major exhibits today. I want you all to stick in your groups, and leaders are to look after the freshman. At noon we will be meeting back here for lunch. Any questions?”
I tried not to mess with the necklace around my neck, hoping I wasn’t drawing any attention to it. We weren’t allowed to wear jewelry with our uniforms, even on fieldtrip day, so I had covered it as best I could. No one had noticed it yet, or so it seemed.
“Where’d you get that?” Sage gestured to the jewelry around my neck, and I struggled to hide it.
“You can see it?!” I cried, using her as a human shield from Mr. Harrington who happened to be looking in our direction.
Sage raised an eyebrow. “Only because you keep fiddling with it.” She smacked my hand away from the chain. “If you don’t want to be caught, stop touching it!”
I sighed, forcing my hands at my side and ignoring as the cold silver touched my skin. I couldn’t help it though. Rubbing the heart pendant seemed to ease my nerves. “Sorry,” I mumbled.
“It’s fine.” She looked at me with gentler eyes now, like she was guilty. “Anyway, what’s up with you and Joseph?”
I didn’t seem to register her question though, because suddenly –standing several feet before us– was Christopher himself. He smiled when I saw him, his head tilting to the side.
I was literally shaking with anticipation. He was here!
“Melody.” Sage placed her hand over my shoulder before I could walk over to him. Her hazel eyes darkened.
“What is it, Sage?” I asked, bewildered.
She took a long look at my expression, before her hand fell off my shoulder. “Nothing.” She sighed. “I’ll see you later.”
She gave a glance back at Christopher, before walking to an artifact.
I shrugged off her odd behavior, seeing as Sage had been a little more cautious ever since her Dad had been in the hospital, and practically skipped to Christopher. I loved how he had waited, still in the same position, until I was at his side.
“Hi,” I said, breathless, the way it always was around him. I went from high energy and excitement to having the wind knocked out of me.
“Hey.” He peered back at my class, which seemed to be taking off in a different direction. “Mind if you ditch the start of this fieldtrip?”
“C-Course not!” I lied, that new excited feeling coursing through me. I had never ditched any of my classes before, but the idea suddenly sounded pleasing.
“I want to show you something.” He took hold of my hand, making my lungs tight across my chest, before leading me toward the gardens outside.
My eyes widened and I wondered if like in all the books and movies I’d read he was taking me somewhere to confess to me or kiss me or something. My chest squeezed at the thought and I cursed myself for not doing my hair better or using my special body wash from my birthday.
I gasped when we got out, all the colors and sunlight radiating off the walls and glass around us. It was breathtaking in here, and we were alone in our own lit up world.
“Now.” Christopher clicked something in his hands, before holding up a silver gun. “Let’s get started, shall we?”
I couldn’t seem to grasp the situation at first. My mind refused to believe it. I tried to think of a rational reason why Christopher would ever be pointing a gun at me in a secluded garden where we were completely alone and probably couldn’t be heard.
