The Vow

I sat on the window seat, knees tucked against my chest as I looked out my window. My heart beated fast as I heard the clock ticking.

A knock came at my door, and I didn't have to turn around to know that it was mom.

"You sure you're not coming sweetie?" mom asked putting a hand on my shoulder.

I just shook my head in reply.

"Oh honey," she said and engulfed me in her embrace.

I couldn't help myself but breakdown, I started crying again. My head started aching, my eyes started to sting, and my chest tightened.

     "Ssshhh, ssshhh," mom said soothingly.

I shook my head and pulled away from the hug, then smiled.

"You're going to be late for the wedding mom," I said and got down from the window seat.

"I'm not going," mom suddenly said. My eyes widen at her answer.

"Oh no, you are... going. If you don't, those bitches would think they've won," I said pushing her towards the door.

They already won anyways, I thought sadly.

"Alright, alright. I'm going," mom said with a smile.

She hugged me once more and went downstairs. I gave a sigh of relief and closed the door. I heard the front door slam shut. Mom likes slamming doors, she said it calms her down.

I walked towards my window and saw my parents backing the drive way and drove away.

"Dan, wait. What do you mean it's over?" I asked bewildered.

"It's over. We're done. Finished," Dan replied sharply.

Tears welled up. "Why? Why marry her?" I asked and my voice cracked.

"Don't you get it? I don't love you anymore," he said firmly, then walked away.

I looked at my clock and it was already quarter to nine, that means, the wedding's starting.

Dan straightened his tux and looked at the mirror then sighed.

Diana, Dan's mom, walked over towards him and did his tie.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Diana asked as she finished his tie and dusted his coat.

"You know, we will always find a way to get through this," she added.

"I think, I couldn't bear to see Kate anymore mom, not after what I did to her," Dan replied looking away from his mother.

"You've been too brave Dan, that's something bad," Mark said walking towards Dan and patted his shoulders.

"Your father is right honey, we're a family," Diana added with a smile.

      "Let's go dear," Mark said.

"It's not too late, me and your father can cancel the deal," Diana suddenly proposed.

Dan shook his head. "No mom, I'm going to do what I'm supposed to do," he said in a straight face.

Dan saw Kate's parents and gave them a weak smile. Emma gave a small wave and Eric nodded in return.

He was already at the altar, waiting impatiently for his bride. He wanted this over and done with.
