See, I went to Cassie’s place because we were working on a project for school. I let myself in because her parents knew me. I heard shouts coming from the living room. Dropping my stuff, I slid into the living room and froze. Cassie’s dad was standing over Cassie, who had a purple bruise on her left cheek. I smelled beer and blood from the cut on Cassie’s forehead. I felt like heaving. For once, I actually felt sorry for Cassie. I slid in front of Cassie. ‘Leave her alone!’ I said, ramming a fist into his gut. Next thing I know, I’m on the floor with blood trailing down my cheek from a cut. Being the tough little kid I was, when he bent over me and prepared to hit me again, I hit him straight in the nose. There was a crunch and he walked back a few feet, holding his nose. I flexed my fingers and felt no pain sear through my fingers. ‘I broke his nose!’ He looked up, his whole face bloody. I took Cassie’s arm and pulled her towards the door as her dad followed us to the door, too. She was shaking real bad. That’s when I remember the phone my parents gave me in case of emergency. Quickly I put Cassie in front of me and whispered my plan to her. She nodded, and I pulled the phone out. Trying to be as quiet as possible, I hit the 0 button and crossed my fingers, praying for a miracle. ‘Hello?’ I poked Cassie’s arm to let her I got 911 on the phone. ‘I would like to report a beating in progress. Can I have the police and two ambulances?’ There was a click and the voice came back on. ‘They are on their way. Are you and the person all right?’ I gulped. ‘Not really. The beater has a broken nose. The person is sporting a cut and a bruise. I currently have a cut on my left cheek.’ I heard sirens outside. ‘I hear sirens. I have to hang up.’ There was click and a beeping noise as I closed my phone. The door burst open and two policemen pointed their guns at Cassie’s dad. “Step away from the children, sir” He stepped away from us, blood dripping down his shirt. Cassie gave a low whimper and stepped back into me, twisting around and sobbing quietly into my shirt. It’s been a few years since then. I saw then why Cassie hated going home every day and came to my place. Now she’s all snobby and rude to me. She hated the fact that I saw that. She hates the fact that I saw how weak she really was.” They were gapping wordlessly at me. “Her dad…” Mel dropped off and Justin finished her sentence. “…Beat her?” I nodded wordlessly. “Can I tell Lu-Lu?” I smirked. “Sure. But she has to promise not to tell anyone before you tell her.” She nodded and took off to find Lu-Lu. “Wow.” I jumped at Justin’s voice. I turned to smile at Justin. “I don’t think my dad could ever do that. He can’t even do that when I really need it.” He leaned against the tree and looked across the lake, not really seeing anything. I stood next to him, leaning on his shoulder and yawning. “Isn’t it pretty?” I yawned again. “You should sleep more.” I laughed. “How do you expect me to sleep when my dreams interfere?” He smirked. “Are you sure you’re fine? I don’t feel like getting up to find you awake or something.” I bit my lip, staring at the setting sun. ‘Please don’t let my dreams interfere tonight.’
Sweat trailed down my face as I woke up from yet the same nightmare. ‘Why won’t this dream leave me alone and disappear from my memory forever? I need a walk.’ I slid off my bunk as quietly as I could, trying not to wake Mel. She is a light sleeper. Slipping out the door, I disappeared down to the dock. I pulled my knees to my chest and stared up at the moon. ‘I was hoping for some time away from my family, but now I wish to be home with my problematic family. At least my dreams wouldn’t be worse there. Ugh.’ I heard something snap behind me, causing me to jump. “Who’s there?” Footsteps echoed along the dock. “Sue?” Oh no. “Why are you up?” He sat next to me with a smirk on his face. “I couldn’t sleep. What about you?” I felt my face begin to burn like crazy, so I looked towards the moon as I answered. “I couldn’t sleep, too.” He looked up at the moon, too. “Did you have that ‘dream’ again?” I flinched, hoping he didn’t see. “No.” He looked unconvinced. “You’re lying.” Ugh!! “Whatever, it’s just a dream. Not like it means anything.” I hope not. “Go to bed, Sue. You need your sleep.” He pressed his lips to my forehead. This isn’t unusual, he always does that. It makes my face burn likes there’s no tomorrow, but I don’t object. “Goodnight.” He walks off, hands in his pockets. I looked to the moon. ‘Now that I look at it, it’s a new moon. That’s a sign that something new is going to happen.’ I touched my forehead at this thought. ‘Mel might be right. Maybe things will change between me and Justin. I hope so.’ I got and walked off to the cabins with a smirk on my face.
