Asher's mattress envelopes me as I fall back on it, him on top of me. The faint sound of Katie playing in her room doesn't faze either of us as he continues to kiss me. His hands are on the bare skin of my hips where my shirt rode up. I crave more skin to skin contact. I raise my hips slightly to try and get the message across but it has the opposite effect. Asher stops.

"Janey" he sighs.

"What? What's wrong?" I start to panic. What did I do?

"Nothing is wrong, baby." I melt at the pet name. "I just...we can't do this now. Katie is down the hall, you have to be home in twenty-five minutes and I--" I cut him off.

"You're right." I sit up, pulling my shirt down and fixing my hair. I feel so stupid and desperate.

"Jane." The seriousness of his tone causes me to look at him. "This isn't going to be a rushed, quick fuck, okay? I won't let it. This is a big deal, and I'm going to make sure it is special." I am stunned by his words.

"Who knew you were such a block of cheese." I smile. He scoffs. Before he can respond, though, I lean in and give him a long, slow kiss. "I should go," I whisper. He sighs.

"I'll call you later?" I nod. Before I leave, I pop into Katie's room and say goodbye, and then Asher walks me to my car, waving as I pull away.

When I get home, my good mood turns sour when I remember the Decker's are coming for dinner. I rush up to my room to find an outfit laid out by my mother. The beige Audrey Hepburn dress with a scalloped neckline and large black bow around the waist is soft and falls at my knees. My hair is curled and pinned back and my black shoes make an obnoxious clacking noise as I walk down the stairs and into the kitchen.

"You look beautiful, dear!" My mother exclaims while handing me silverware to set the table with. As I finish setting the last place, the doorbell rings. My father emerges from his study and Seth comes down the stairs. The three of us wait behind my mother as she opens the door to greet the guests.

"Good evening, Mrs. Humphrey." Harvey greet politely.

"Hello, Harvey. Welcome."

"Hey Jane," Harvey says.

"Hi Harvey."

"You look beautiful." I mutter a thanks and greet the rest of his family. Harvey has two younger twin sisters- Catherine and Clare. We al sit down at the table and start to eat dinner. I am sat next to Harvey who keeps brushing his hand against my leg "accidently".

"So, Harvey." My mother starts, "will you be attending the spring formal?" Oh god.

"Yes Ma'am." He nods. "I was actually thinking of asking Jane." My fork clatters on my plate as it falls out of my hand and my eyes are as wide as saucers. Seth stifles a laugh. He may enjoy this privileged life, but he still realizes how much of a square Harvey is.

"That's great!" My mother cheers. Harvey's mother is equally as excited. His father however, is engrossed in a conversation with my father about who knows what.

"I actually don't know if I am going," I mumble.

"Jane! You must accept his invitation!"

"It was hardly an invitation, Mom."

"Jane--" Harvey cuts off my mother.

"She is right, Mrs. Humphrey. I will ask her properly soon, in a way she won't be able to refuse." He assures. I stuff more vegetables into my mouth and pray this dinner will end soon.

. . . .

"Thank you so much for coming, Marie!" My mother hugs Mrs. Decker and waves to the rest of the family before closing the door. I try to escape upstairs, but I am not quick enough.

"Jane!"

"Yes?"

"Why don't you want to go to the Spring Formal with Harvey?" She seems genuinely upset and I can't for the life of me understand why this concerns her so much.

"Harvey is just a friend, Mother. And he is barely that. We just don't have a lot in common besides our families." I explain. She sighs.

"We will talk about this more tomorrow, it's late. Go finish your revisions." I sigh and slowly climb the stairs.

. . . .

The next day at school I am fishing books out of my locker when I feel lips on my shoulder. I turn to see Asher smiling at me.

"Wow, public displays of affection?" I raise my eyebrows. He shrugs smugly. Putting a hand on the locker next to mine he leans forward and I lean back so I am against the wall, my books hugged to my chest.

"I have to let everyone here know whose girlfriend you are." He whispers, looking at my lips.

"Girlfriend?"

"Mmhm." He leans in and connects our lips. My locker slams shut and I jump, pulling away. Melissa stands next to us, a glare on her face.

"What the hell have I missed?"

. . . .
