Chapter 5

[Danielle]

"Hey are you awake?"

I open my eyes to see a smiling Eric staring at me with wide eyes. "Wha..what happened? I feel terrible."

"I don't know for sure. All I know is that after I got the letter back I saw you falling out of your window. I caught you luckily and brought you here to the infirmary."

"My Prince. Always catching falling damsels in distress." He smiled.

I pushed onto the bed for support to lean up, but he just pushed me back down and said, "No you shouldn't be leaning up. Not yet. You need to rest a bit more."

"I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself thank you very much," I said as I leaned up.

We both turned our heads to the door as Peter knocked quietly. "Um, am I interrupting something?"

"No," I said. But Eric responded with a "yes" instead.

"Um Eric we can talk later right?"

"Oh yeah of course. I'll see you later Danielle," he said then lightly kissed my hand. And of course I blushed and smiled.

As Eric walked out of the room Peter scoffed as he roughly bumped into him. Peter stumbled back but caught his balance before he could fall.

"What's the scoff for?"

"Nothing. So what happened? I mean last night after you know, we argued?"

"Oh, well I don't really know. All I know is I was really mad then locked the door before I fell asleep. But when I woke up, I had a massive headache and I couldn't move at all. I felt like I had been drugged. Where's Mr. Menrow? Your dad."

"Oh he um.....he disappeared last night."

"What?! What do you mean?? When?! Where?! How?! Did I mention why?!? And by who?!?"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Come down. The thing is, we don't know. Some guards saw him last night guarding the courtyard. But after that he was nowhere to be found. I'm...I'm really worried about him. I'm sure he's fine but...who knows..."

"Oh my gosh. So he's gone? For sure? Like the other guard have checked everywhere?"

"Yeah but they're doing a 5th search right now."

"Wait, who's going to be my personal guard now? Because I'm not really comfortable with anyone else watching over me. He usually gives me my space and time to do whatever, with a new guard it's like I'm going to be in prison! Oh this is really bad! I can't get another guard! Think of what he'll do to make sure that I'm fine. He'll be watching over me like a hawk 24/7!"

"That's what you're worried about?! My dad has gone missing! He could be dead right now and all you're thinking about is how protective another guard is going to be?! Gosh, you're so selfish!"

"Excuse me, I'm over here lying in a infirmary!" I snapped. You have no right to talk to me like that! When will you get that my needs are important too!"

"You know what, just forget it. Some people are just to anthropocentric to understand anything that doesn't revolve around themselves."

"You have no right to say that to me!"

"You've changed so much! What happened to you?! I remember the sweet, free going Danielle. Not this person in front of me right now." You've become so selfish, and I hate this side of you. When you stop being this person right now, come find me. If not, don't." And with that, he left.
