Aurora looks down from where she lays in the clouds.
She's looking at a boy. A fairly handsome, beautiful boy. Which is a rarity to find amongst humans.
His eyes are a stunning shade of bright green. Though what is rather peculiar is the strange quality that his eyes posses. Which is that they change into completely different colors. They shift from green to the clearest most striking shade of deep blue and back to green again. And at times they turn from green to an odd color that is lighter than hazel. Almost golden, but not quite. The best way to describe the color would be a sort of, honey golden-yellow. But in the end they turn to green again.
Aurora always wonders why that is.
How strange, she ponders, watching him dive into the the water again. But beautiful none the less.
She lets out a wistful sigh and spreads out her powerful wings.
"AURORA!" someone bellows from behind her.
"Ah!" Aurora screams, soaring 20 feet into the air. She looks around in every direction to see who had scared her. When she catches a glimpse of the one responsible for her racing heart she shouts out.
"Benji! Don't, do that! How many times do I have to tell you?" she asks him slightly agitated, landing softly on the cottony clouds she had been resting on only moments before.
He laughs and walks out from behind the white puffs he had used to conceal himself.
It begins to seem like it will take forever before he'll stop laughing. Aurora crosses her arms and waits for him to get a hold of himself.
Just stay calm. He can only get to you if you let him, she thinks, trying to convince herself.
Unsuccessfully.
"Agh! Can you stop? Please?" she begs, turning on her heel and walking away.
Benji, nearly doubled over in laughter jumps up and lands with a bounce infront of her. He puts his hands on his knees and catches his breath. Slowly straightening up, he finally, stops laughing.
He lifts his hand, places it on her shoulder and looks her in the eyes. "Oh, Aurora. As long as its funny and I find it amusing and entertaining; I will continue doing it," he says, as if the answer should have been obvious from the beginning. He gives her head a pat. "Besides. The opportunity was just too good to pass up," he states, snickering quietly.
Aurora rolls her eyes and swats his hand away.
"Can you not? I'm not a child without wings anymore. Or a neophyte. I'm a guardian now."
"A guardian 'in training'," he corrects her.
She looks away and blushes. "Yeah, yeah. Okay, fine," she grants. "Guardian 'in training'."
He smiles softly at her and gives her a nudge with his shoulder. "What were you doing anyway?" he asks, raising an eyebrow. "Looking at that kid again?"
Aurora's blush deepens.
"N-no," she stammers, shaking her head furiously, "I wasn't! And he isn't a kid," she protests.
"He is about the same age as you so...he's a kid," he says flatly, walking over to where she had been before, and peers over the edge.
"You weren't huh?" he asks, looking back at her with a smirk. He looks back at the boy. "What's his name again? Ronnie..."
"Ronan." she corrects him, rather quickly. Like a reflex.
Aurora bites down on her lip and puts her hands behind her back, feeling a bit flustered. She looks down at her small feet in shame. Her shoulders slump.
He chuckles, "Don't worry about it," he reassures. "You've never been a good liar," he reminds her.
"Neither have you!" she fires back.
"Well, yeah," he replies. "We are angels after all. We're not supposed to be."
"Yeah. I guess you're right." she says, nodding.
"Of course I'm right. I'm your big brother."
Aurora stares at her brother, her eyebrows knitting together. "Can you stop with the whole big brother thing? You've given it too many times to count."
"And your point is?" he taunts.
Aurora lets out a deep sigh and looks over at the setting sun. Benji follows her gaze.
"Its almost gone."
"Yeah." she replies.
A minute passes between them in silence.
"Aurora," he starts, breaking the quiet air around them. "You came from father. I came from mother. You know what dad told me before he passed."
"Yes, I do."
"Well I'm going to tell you again anyway."
Aurora closes her eyes.
"He said, 'Benjamin. Take your sister. Take care and watch over her. She is your responsibility from now on. Treat her well. Love her, as your mother loved you.
"And as I love you," he finishes softly, his voice becoming quiet. Barely above a whisper.
Aurora's eyes open and she sees that there are tears in her brother's eyes.
"Benji...," she murmurs, a lump forming in her throat. She walks over and puts her arms around him. "Don't cry Benji. Please don't cry," she pleads. "I'd rather you scare me a million more times than see you shed a single tear."
"What, this?" he asks, rubbing his eyes. "I'm not crying, what are you talking about? These are just tears of joy for having such a cool little sister," he says, feeling Aurora's arms loosen and let go. He looks down and sees her smiling up at him. "Who is mildly obsessed with a human," he continues.
Aurora's smile disappears in an instant. She draws an arm back, ready to strike. Benji extends his massive wings to their full size and before Aurora can take a swing he is already up in the air, zooming away from her through the clouds, laughing his head off.
"Possibly more than mildly," he calls back, his laughter filling the night.
Aurora shakes her head and grins, taking flight after him. Using the light of the crescent moon above as her guide.
