I loved having uniforms for school. I suppose it's because I never had to worry about what I was going to wear because we were told what to wear. It was kind of nice to know that everyone had to wear the same thing. That morning I decided I'd spice up my uniform slightly and change up how I wore it. I wore the grey pleated skirt a little higher, turning it into a high waisted skirt. I wore my tie a little looser and opted for a grey boyfriend cardigan instead of my usual nerdy V-Neck jumper. I wore my hair down and let my natural curls take over my shoulders and wore white ankle socks with a lace trim with my patent grey brogues.
As I looked at myself in the mirror, I noticed little things about myself that I actually sort of liked. For example, I liked how my long dark hair made my blue eyes stand out. I'd gone simple with makeup today. Different to usual. Usually I didn't wear makeup at all. I had some gold eyeshadow with brown in the crease and I applied a little bit of mascara to open my eyes. I applied foundation and put a little bit of a peach blusher to my cheeks before finishing with a tiny bit of nude lipgloss.
As I walked downstairs my Mum looked at me like I was an alien.
"Who are you and what have you done with my daughter?" She joked before pouring a glass of orange juice and sliding it across the breakfast counter towards me.
"Whatever do you mean?" I played along taking a sip.
"Well, you just look different."
"Good different or bad different?" I asked.
"Good different." She looked at my eyes and motioned for me to close them so I did. "That gold eyeshadow does wonders for your eyes."
"I thought so too."
"So does any of this," she waved her finger around at me, "have anything to do with Nick?" she asked accusingly.
"No. Of course not." I don't know who I was trying to kid more, my mother or myself. Of course it had something to do with Nick. What he'd said last night made me feel special. A feeling that made me do all sorts of crazy things, apparently.
I picked up my rucksack and walked out the door. My walk to the bus stop was quick and my wait was even quicker. As I stepped onto the bus people watched me. A sensation I'd never felt. People watched me as I sat down and as soon as the bus started moving I heard them start whispering.
It was the perfect opportunity to put my earphones in and listen to Hobbie Stuart. He wasn't very well known but his voice was incredible. I stumbled across him whilst watching YouTube videos and immediately fell in love. He was cute too, which of course is a bonus.
I got off the bus and walked into the library as I would any other day. Mrs Jefferson came over and sat beside me.
"You're looking lovely today." She winked and I giggled.
"Thank you Mrs Jefferson and might I say, that sweater looks amazing on you."
"Oh you're a sweetheart aren't you." She looked behind me. "It looks like you've got a visitor." She raised her eyebrows and rolled her eyes before walking away to attend the bookshelves.
I turned around to see Nick standing there smiling at me.
"Wow. I didn't know Lena Cortez could actually apply makeup." He teased. I punched him lightly on the arm.
"Oh shut up you dick. Also buzz off, Mrs Jefferson will start hating me if she thinks I'm associated with you." I played back.
"Sorry, wouldn't want to hurt your street cred would I. Although it's more like book cred really isn't it?" I punched him again.
"Anyway is there a reason you're over here insulting me, or did you just fancy a tease and happened to choose me as a victim?"
"I just happened to choose you. No, there is a reason. I was wondering if you wanted to come to a small get together at my house later tonight?"
"I'll have to text my mom to see if it's okay with her, but it should be alright. Who's going?" I had to ask. I don't know if I could handle all the dickheads and bitches Nick hung out with.
"Samantha, Gabby, Daniel, Shane and Jess."
"Wait, Jess is going?" I suddenly remembered Jess and Nick were friends. They used to date but now they kept things on a friendly level.
"Yeah. Is that a problem?" Nick looked confused so I decided to fill him in.
"No, it's just me and Jess used to best friends in middle school. Then when high school came around she found better friends and naturally we grew apart." I felt a little sad remembering how close we used to be and how she doesn't even acknowledge my existence anymore.
"If it's a problem Jess doesn't have to come?" Nick was being so sweet about it. He could obviously sense I was a little apprehensive about the whole ordeal and was trying to comfort me.
"Oh no, it's fine. I know you and Jess are friends. Are you sure everyone will be alright with me coming?"
"Well they're gonna have to be because it's my house and I want you there." He slipped his fingers into mine and squeezed my hand lightly.
"Okay. I guess if it's alright with my Mom I'm coming." I smiled at Nick and he smiled back.
"Okay, sounds good." He pulled his hand away from mine and started slowly walking backwards towards the door. "I'll see you in English Lit."
"Yeah, bye."
I got out my phone and began a message to my Mom.
Lena: Hey mom, is it okay if I go over to Nick's house tonight? He's invited me over to hang out with him and a few of his friends. x
I got a reply within about five minutes.
Mom: Yes honey, of course that's okay. I'll see you after school. Have a good day. x
Looks like I was going to Nick's. I'd have to face my ex-best friend again. That I was not looking forward to.
